Kindness begets kindness. So, wanted to create a space to share and amplify stories of kindness with the hope that it inspires a chain reaction.

Oh wow—there are so many moments that come to mind… Quick side-quest? This invite-only restaurant in Shanghai was recommended to my brother and me – apparently real fancy, real nice… sounds good! The cab dropped us off at the far end of a dark alley with steam creeping through cracks in the street, and we weren’t so confident. We entered through this heavy, windowless steel door and found ourselves in a modern, calm dining room with ambient lighting and what must have been the biggest indoor bonsai tree, we had ever seen. I believe the kindest thing you can do for anyone is to give them opportunities and support. I was privileged to have the support and mentorship of so many amazing teachers, writers, editors, and professors, who believed in me and gave me the opportunity to study and write about art at a very young age. In 1998 at Southwest Missouri University as a freshman, I was in my first black and white photography class shooting 35 mm film. I was learning how to shoot without a flash. Ziggy Marley came to our college to do an outdoor show and I brought my camera and took photos in some not so great weather I remember. When I was developing this print another photo student asked to buy a copy of it off me. This confirmed to me that this photo was special, I sold him a print and I signed, framed and hung up another print up of it at the house I was living in. Read more>>

I have a good friend who I met on social media not long after my marriage fell apart. There isn’t just one instance I can name in which I have received kindness from this person. They have been in my corner since the moment I met them. Any idea I have, they support me. When I’m too scared to do something they give me a kick in the rear to do it. They tell me like it is. They show up on my low days when I want to give up, and just listen. They have put my name in rooms and spaces I could never even imagine being in. They are always looking out for me. When I moved to Southern California to pursue my dreams, everything fell apart when I arrived. Read more>>

Since my mother is a 2 time breast cancer survivor, so I felt called to get involved with a group called Pink Ribbon Riders, they are a charitable orgnization that hosted events and majority of the benefits went to various breast cancer survivors in need. Twelve years ago when I was working as a manager of a snowmobile rental shop in Grand Lake Colorado, I volunteered that year when they decided to host a snowmobile run event in my town. These events were always a ton of fun and for a great cause! Read more>>

In my life, kindness means everything to me, as I have been confronted with many excruciatingly painful obstacles to overcome – caused by sick, evil people. As a mere toddler I experienced horrific sexual trauma by an uncle – that my own favorite grandmother witnessed, and made me hide it under threat of her not loving me anymore. I was 4 years old. On top of that I experienced inappropriate and aggressive physical punishment as a child. Then bullied at school because I was “different.” However, my life’s experience with trauma had only just begun. I was raped yet again when I was 13 and 19 years old by being drugged by the same pedophiliac uncle. Read more>>

One of the most remarkable acts of kindness I have experienced occurred recently during the planning of my women’s empowerment conference, “Women en Blanc.” A key component of this event was a VIP reception, which I envisioned as an exclusive cocktail party. However, I faced significant challenges in finding a suitable venue that matched my aesthetic vision while remaining within budget constraints. At a networking event to which I was invited, I shared my enthusiasm with a friend about how perfect the venue would be for the reception. She kindly offered to look into the venue’s availability for me. A few days later, she reached out to inform me that the venue was indeed available and had been secured. When I inquired about the associated costs, I was taken aback by her response; she generously offered to cover the entire expense without expecting any public acknowledgment. Read more>>

One of the kindest things anyone has ever done for me was when Ms. Leda Young reached out to invite me to speak about my experience as a caregiver and advocate for children with physical and intellectual disabilities. She asked me to share my story with the Greenville Civitan Club, which opened a door I never expected. That speech led to me being nominated for and receiving the International Servant’s Heart Award. During the awards banquet, I shared my vision for Through Evely’s Eyes, and that moment was the catalyst for receiving seed money to officially establish it as a 501(c)(3). Ms. Young saw something in me, gave me the opportunity to share my story, and ultimately helped bring my vision to life. That single act of kindness changed everything and I’m forever grateful. As a new author, I felt like I was in an ocean. Treading water, trying to move forward, sometimes being pushed back, and than surrounded by sharks! People coming out of nowhere trying to “help” me but for a high price tag for their services. They did not have good intentions for me but only for themselves and their profit lines. Until I made a connection with a man named Mark Sean Wilson. Mark turned out to be my illustrator. He helped me because he believed in my project and offered advice that did not come with an obnoxious cost that would only advance his pocketbook. He gave me advice, suggestions, and comments because he is a good human and he wanted to make me better and more knowledgeable about this incredibly hard business. Read more>>

After graduating from UNLV in 2013, I moved to Los Angeles to become a working actor. I learned pretty quickly that this town is big, yet small but you’ll only make it if you’re lucky, have money or you know someone. I worked hard though, I did two years of being a production assistant and working on commercials and shows, but I was barely able to keep up with rent, and grocery shopping was a luxury. Then there was this one time that I will never forget. There I was working as a PA on the show LET’S MAKE A DEAL. The job involved registering every contestant that was on the show for that day, loading them all onto busses and guiding them to their seats on to the stage. Now while the show was in progress I would be cleaning the honey wagons (that’s a cute name for porta potties). I remember having to take a yard stick to push buildup down a toilet and that’s when I thought to myself, “what am I doing here? I have a college degree and I’m cleaning toilets.” Read more>>

So many people have blessed my life and kindness is something I experience often from others but when I read the question I immediately remembered a conference that I was attending as a featured musical guest. I had made myself very available, above and beyond what I was asked to do in order to support any speaker or workshop facilitator with music and I had volunteered for administrative tasks, etc. I was having a great week and was just so filled up that I wanted to give back so I kept doing so. Then on the last night of the conference there was an auction and one of the items was a three month mentoring package with a man that I deeply respected and very much wanted to know and study with named Rev. David Leonard. Read more>>
