We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Bec Koop a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Bec, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Day to day the world can seem like a tough place, but there’s also so much kindness in the world and we think talking about that kindness helps spread it and make the world a nicer, kinder place. Can you share a story of a time when someone did something really kind for you?
Since my mother is a 2 time breast cancer survivor, so I felt called to get involved with a group called Pink Ribbon Riders, they are a charitable orgnization that hosted events and majority of the benefits went to various breast cancer survivors in need. Twelve years ago when I was working as a manager of a snowmobile rental shop in Grand Lake Colorado, I volunteered that year when they decided to host a snowmobile run event in my town. These events were always a ton of fun and for a great cause!
Thankfully I was able to convince the owner of the company I worked for called Grand Adventures to be one of the leading sponsors for this local event. It was a great turnout with many attendees, even my mother was able to fly out and attend the event and absolutely an overall success.
One major thing that made a large impact that day was during dinner time there were various items being auctioned off and on a wild whim I decided to auction off my long beautiful natural blond hair to be cut off as a donation for a wig. The bidding war quickly erupted and it went from $100, $200, $500, next thing it jumped to $1,000! Much to my surprise my incredibly generous boss wasn’t going to lose but also wanted to show me and the organization his support. Next thing I knew, he stood up and yelled “How about $5,000?!?!?” The room exploded in cheering and excitement and better yet, he let my mother do the honors of cutting off nearly 11 inches of my hair that day in front of everyone at the event!
It was a day myself and my mother will never forget and always look back on with beautiful fond memories.
Bec, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi! My name is Bec and I am a fire starter of joy! It is my goal to help you open your mind, heal your heart and free your soul. As somone who has experienced many major losses, heartaches and traumas, I have made it my mission to help others heal their inner child wounds, come back into calmess and to find balance and harmony in their life.
I feel that since I was able to walk through the fires of hell, I have now returned with water to help those in need and offer them various ways to help heal their soul just as I have. I strive to help my clients can find their inner peace during my tea ceremonies, reiki/healing touch sessions or even via a sound healing experience. Other clients may choose a more active session which may include a sacred cacao ceremony along with somatic movements, inner child dance parties and even various art outlets.
Many of my clients have found deep healing in my larger community gatherings and others have benefited from individual session both in person and/or virtually. I hope to share various sacred plant medicines, ancient breathwork techiniques, mantras and other modalities with those who are ready to open their hearts and let their inner child out to play!
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
While working for the previously mentioned snowmobile rental company, I was involved in a horrific snowmobile wreck. Prior to the wreck, I was an avid outdoors lady and had a whitewater kayak, multiple snowboards, a full suspension downhill bike, 2 snowmobiles and plenty of other toys to push my physical and mental limits. I seriously played HARD, come on now my degree was in recreation and tourism so what did you expect?
Long story short, I was out snowmobiling one day with a friend deep in the backcountry and was going 60+ mph on one of the main trails when someone popped out of the woods on a side track and t-boned my machine with their snowmobile. My machine was totalled and I flew over the handlebars and hit a tree with my spine. As a result, I had 4 dislocated ribs, 5 messed up vertebraes and a severly strained shoulder (that had become dislocated then quickly popped back into place). After going to several spine specialists, I was told to give up my dreams and visions of ever being an athlete any more; that I would need to be prescribed opiates to handle the pain and likely I would need a back surgery within a few years. This news was devastating to me because all I knew was my healthy and extremely active lifestyle, so it actually spiralled me into a bit a depression although I was told I was “lucky to be alive”.
After just two weeks, I decided to stop taking pain pills and decided that I was going to naturally proved the doctor wrong. This is when I found yoga to help heal my body and strengthen my core but I also found breathwork and meditation to help ease the depression and anxiety I was experiencing. Ultimately I still did end up selling all of my ‘extreme sports toys” and totally changing my life from something that was very fast paced and full of adrenaline to finding the simple joys in life and enjoying more of a slower and peaceful life.
It was through this experience that I drastically changed my whole life, my career path and even my life partner. It was also because of this accident that I found yoga, my inner peace, bliss and harmony that I wanted so badly. Here I am nearly 11 years later, still surgery free, feeling stronger mentally and physically than I could have imagined after a truly life altering accident.
I count my blessings for the exact way this all worked out because it did show me that I was stronger than I originally gave myself credit for. This ultimately led me to want to work with clients who have experienced great losses and traumas to show them that there truly is light at the end of the dark tunnel. I was able to rewrite my story, find a greater purpose in life and I want to help others do the same!
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I feel that much of my credibility and reputation have came from sharing my story and being truly authentic with people about some of the darkest moments in my life. The vulnerability made me not only more relateable but also even an inspiration to some who have also faced major traumas in their life.
It was thru my resilience that I was able to show that you can indeed change your life for the better if you put your heart and soul into, but that it does require help from others sometimes. It was my goal to let people know that you don’t need to do it all alone and that there are many ways to greatly improve your life and mental state other than just taking a prescripton pill or “accepting the circumstances”. Instead I fought like hell to improve my mental and physical state and tried many various modalities. I hope to show the my audience that although traditional talk therapy can be a wonderful outlet, that there are also other forms of healing modalities and therapies and to continue trying to find what really works best for you. You are worth the effort and your future self will thank you!
