Every once in a while we have the good fortune of working on a project that we feel truly matters, a project that we’ll still be thinking about years from now. Maybe even something we can imagine telling our grandkids about – surely you’ve had moments like that where something you did in your professional life really mattered?

This body of work encompasses what life has been like for the past 2 years for me. A lot has happened in that span of time. I got married, had my son, left my job, bought a house, got my first plaque and trimmed a lot of fat all in 2 years. The most meaningful project I’ve worked on would by my debut feature film as a writer/director, Acid Test, which premiered at the 2021 Austin Film Festival and will be available on digital platforms fall 2022. Acid Test is a coming-of-age rebellion story fueled by Riot Grrrl music, a dysfunctional family, and LSD. Set in 1992 and based on true events from my own tumble through adolescence into adulthood. Hello and thank you for inviting me to talk with Canvas Rebel. All of my artistic projects begin with a personal connection and tell a story about who I am. The photographs I made of my family and our limited surroundings during the initial Covid-19 lockdown encapsulates the joys and challenges of my early motherhood and, thus, are the most meaningful works I have made. Making pictures for those several months helped me survive that difficult time; we had just moved across the country, we barely knew anyone in San Diego, and we were living amidst construction on our home and in our neighborhood. For us, it is To Die For, a four-episode web series about a hitman looking for love. The project explores love, friendship, loneliness, and the internet: all things relevant to our lives. We started working on it together about a year ago and it has been the largest production of both of our careers. The combined episodes are equivalent to a feature film, and it has been such a rewarding challenge to tackle as students working with the limited resources at our disposal. When I had a family member that got really sick, it was a serious condition and the medical expenses were going to be astronomical. I painted a small canvas and donated some other paintings to auction off. All the proceeds went to her fund to pay for the bills. She and I were not very close, we did spend some time together when we would visit. But I knew I could do something so I did what I could, make some art. I experienced many hardships at a young age. By the time I was 13, my parents had divorced, and I was living with debilitating migraines, anxiety, depression, and acne, among other issues.
