Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Raye’vn Harper. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Raye’vn, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
My life as a creative has been lifelong. I’ve always used art as a way to express what words and definitions can’t—to better understand myself and the world around me. My journey as a professional creative began through a community fundraising project for the nonprofit 1DivineLine2Health in Columbus, Ohio. I started by selling my art and handmade jewelry to support the mission, and it was deeply meaningful to see my work make a tangible impact in my own neighborhood—and to watch that organization continue to thrive.
As the project came to a close, I began receiving ongoing commissions for artwork and jewelry, which affirmed that this path could be sustainable. In 2020, I took a major leap of faith and relocated to Austin to work within the museum community—only for the world to shut down 72 hours later due to the pandemic. Even during that uncertain time, commissions and creative requests continued to come in, ultimately giving birth to Raye’vns Nest.
When the city began to reopen, I fell in love with Austin’s strange, vibrant creative energy. Soon after, I was invited to display my work in my first Austin-based show. Over the past five years, I’ve had incredibly meaningful experiences as an artist, but one of the most impactful has been co-founding and becoming an active part of Bring Back The Weird, helping nurture the creative spirit of the city and its community.

Raye’vn, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a multidisciplinary artist, designer, and curator with over a decade of experience creating bold, community-centered visual work. My practice bridges art, education, and sustainability—bringing engaging creative experiences to museums, universities, local businesses, and grassroots spaces.
Rooted in mixed-media experimentation, my work uses reclaimed, antique, and natural materials to produce graphic-driven art with strong contrast and narrative depth. Influenced by street art and tactile storytelling, I transform paper, canvas, skateboards, fashion, and physical spaces into immersive visual statements. Sustainability isn’t an afterthought in my process—it’s a core design principle that shapes both the materials I use and the stories I tell.
My creative services include 2D illustration, digital art, business branding, character design, skateboard graphics, book and music covers, and fashion-based artwork. I offer both ready-to-wear pieces and custom commissions, as well as creative consultation and art, design, and fabrication for fashion, cosplay, and prop-based projects. Collaboration is central to my work, and I regularly partner with local organizations, brands, and creatives to develop meaningful, place-based projects.
What sets my brand apart is the fusion of intentional sustainability, fearless design, and community connection. I create work that is visually striking, accessible, and rooted in shared experience—art that invites people in rather than speaks over them.
I’m also one of four creatives behind Bring Back The Weird, a collective dedicated to preserving and evolving Austin’s original creative spirit. Through community-driven events, sustainable practices, and radical authenticity, we amplify the makers and dreamers shaping the city’s cultural future. From our creative home, Vibe Haus, we provide space for artists, vendors, organizers, and collaborators to connect, create, and thrive together.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
At the core of my work is a mission to bring sustainability, street art culture, and reciprocal community together in ways that are accessible, bold, and rooted in human connection. When I’m not coordinating exhibitions or designing creative materials, I mentor emerging creatives, document stories through photography and writing, and explore new ways to blend art with meaningful community impact. I’m most energized by roles that bridge creativity, service, and education—spaces where art becomes a tool for connection, learning, care, and collective growth.
My creative journey has been shaped by resilience, reinvention, and a deep commitment to community. Building a career in the arts has required me to continually develop, rebuild, and reimagine—not only my work, but my brand and my identity as an entrepreneur. In an increasingly competitive and conformist creative landscape, balancing artistic integrity with the realities of sustainability, visibility, and growth can be overwhelming. During moments of uncertainty, I learned to move forward by trusting that there was always something beyond the challenges I was facing—a deeper purpose, more possibility, and greater impact than what was immediately visible. That mindset continues to guide my practice today.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I believe creatives are the voice and lifeblood of humanity’s truth, and sustaining a healthy creative ecosystem requires active, intentional participation. To truly support artists, society must invest time, energy, and resources into local art, artists, and creative spaces—because the arts are built and sustained by human connection, not convenience. While technology will always play a role, discernment is essential in how it replaces or supports creative labor, and in considering its impact on artists, culture, and the environment.
Supporting artists means showing up: attending events, purchasing original work, collaborating, sharing resources, and advocating for accessible creative spaces. It means choosing community over automation and human connection over convenience whenever possible. These actions allow artists to create sustainably, build community, and preserve what makes cities feel alive.
If we want vibrant, authentic, and culturally rich cities, the call to action is simple: support the people making it happen. Step outside your comfort zone. Engage locally. By fostering sustainable, community-driven creativity, society helps cultivate cultural ecosystems that remain strange, expressive, and deeply human—keeping Austin, and creative communities everywhere, vibrant and unforgettable.
