Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? So, we asked some very sharp folks to tell us the stories of how they came up with the names of their brands.

Marble Wines was born from a deep appreciation for artistry and individuality. Like Marble – the stone – each piece has its unique veining, patterns, and character; no two are exactly alike. This perfectly symbolizes our celebration of individual expression and the beauty of diversity. Read more>>

I love the story of how my business name came to be. I had a lifelong friend in town visiting. We went out to breakfast at a neighborhood cafe in Studio City, CA and I confessed to her that I was thinking about starting my own business. I had been doing social media at a small production company and was starting to have more and more people ask if I was doing it professionally and if they could hire me. It felt like something was pulling me in the direction of starting my own business but I had no idea where to start. Read more>>

My brand, Hookchute, is named after my favorite ski run. This run is wider y shaped bowl and the top that narrows into a chute at the bottom. I have had some of the deepest powder runs on this run, with my dad and friends accompanying me. I name all my clothing that I sell from the same ski area trail map, because it is my favorite place! I grew up skiing with my dad there every weekend! Read more>>

Being in the video production and creative world, coming up with fresh, exciting ideas and concepts is the norm. However, for some reason coming up with names or titles is a massive weakness of mine, and I think its because I tend to overthink those kinds of things alot. Blacksail came from my love of old world colonial ships and the era that they came from. I also needed something to stand out, and be unique, and I feel like our name does just that. Read more>>

In 2009, The Simply Luxurious Life blog gained its name without any intention of turning it into a business, only a needed outlet to share with a blank screen (at that point) what brought me so much contentment, yet seemed to my immediate connections of people (friends, family, colleagues, etc.) where I lived at the time, impossible to bring so much joy and delight as I genuinely enjoyed living a quiet life alone, pottering in my garden, walking my dogs and savoring time at home. So, when I first opened my spa, the only names I could think of were like…”serenity” or “relax and renew” Then my care started playing one of my favorite songs. Lady Stardust by David Bowie. it hit me that this is the best name in the world! It’s different. It stands out. Thus..Lady Stardust Spa was born. It was quite a magical moment. Read more>>

When we started thinking about creating a yarn-focused craft shop, also known as a Local Yarn Shop, I struggled with the idea of using industry-specific terminology. Our main goal was to build an inclusive brand and space where everyone would feel welcome as soon as they walked through the door. In my field, knitting puns and jargon are often the go-to because knitting tends to dominate the yarn world. However, I wanted to emphasize that yarn has so many other creative possibilities—such as crochet, embroidery, weaving, crafting, quilting, and many other forms of artistry. Yarn isn’t just for fiber crafters; it’s a versatile material for all kinds of creative mediums. Read more>>

Love over Fear Wellness is the name of my private practice where I provide mental health therapy as well as Trauma-Informed Personal Training. The name of my practice is so special to me that I even have it tattooed on my body! Love > Fear. The way I think about anything is basically the way I think about everything. I believe if we are able to really get in-tuned with ourselves and assess where we are making decisions from, we will end up in one of these two categories – from a place of love or from a place of fear. My story studio “The Saga Quest” came about from me and my husband being storytellers and fantasy gamers, and also my being a huge mythology nerd.
If you’re also a fellow fan of Norse myth you know that a saga is “a long tale of legendary achievement.” And for me—someone who is autistic and dyslexic—I grew up being told that being a professional storyteller was something beyond my capabilities. Clearly I chose NOT to listen. After all a quest is the pursuit of something even if the journey proves long and arduous. Read more>>

I recently have rebranded from previously being ‘Grove Design Co.’ to now being named ‘Take it Easy Designs.’ Though this story behind the reasoning is really sad it now has a more greater meaning than anything else I could have ever named it. On mother’s day of 2024 (May 12, 2024) I was on a family trip with my husband and 2, about to be 3, year old son visiting my husbands biological mom, sister, step-dad, and extended family in Arizona. We had a wonderful weekends worth of visits to Sedona, Grand Canyon, etc.. On the way back that mother’s day after visiting Antelope Canyon in Page, AZ that morning and grabbing some lunch we made our drive back to Phoenix and unfortunately on the drive down our vehicle (Carrying my husband, myself, our son, my mother-in-law & my sister-in-la Read more>>

Laura and I struggled with this question for quite a while. We had friends’ input. Family suggestions. None of them really resonated. Our LLC was easy – LauraSquared. Why not? We’re both named Laura and our circle of friends already referred to us as the Lauras. But our brand – what were we going to call our little quarantine experiment gone small business? One day when we were standing in a line of a coffee shop – and it was not Starbucks – I said to Laura, “wow, it takes some moxie to open a coffee shop in the shadow of Starbucks.” That’s when it struck us. MOXIE! Read more>>

While studying graphic design, I took a course where our final assignment was to create a fictitious graphic design business and design an ad for a magazine. Using Photoshop, I designed a collage that visually represented the brand, and that’s when Bright Nest was born. The name itself was intentional: “Bright” symbolized ideas, intelligence, and creativity, while “Nest” represented a place where those ideas could come to life. Read more>>

I really loved a class I had in my undergrad, Eastern Asian Literature. I came across the Tao Te Ching and read “The valley spirit never dies. It’s called dark female-enigma, and the gateway of dark female-enigma is called the root of heaven and earth, gossamer so unceasing it seems real. Use it; it’s effortless.” This has stuck with me for so long. It has meant different things to me at different times of my life. My first business name was Her Dark Enigma, an embodiment of this poem. Now my production and design company, Dark Enigma Productions is an extension of that. Most people may think of morbidity when they hear the word Dark, but this word signifies the darkness we embark on in every new adventure only to later find our way through to the light of our successes. Finding our name started with rebranding our business, and it was particularly tough to find something that would stand out, align with the new direction we were going, and be memorable. And, of course, we wanted the name to be significant and meaningful so that people could get a glimpse of who we were and what we stood for. Read more>>

Coming up with a YouTube channel name that stuck was one of the earliest hurdles I had to overcome when I started The Record Spinner because you want a name that is simple and people will remember. I see it as something people can spend too much time coining because the reality is once you’re off to the races flaunting your craft, that name is going to stick with you and you want to make sure its a banner you’re comfortable being under for as long as you have it. As silly as this will sound, I chose “The Record Spinner” because I could identify as one, and quite frankly, no one else on YouTube had a channel with the name so it seemed safe to use! Read more>>

The name De La Gateau is actually a play on words from a character on one of my favorite shows, The Fresh Prince of Bel- Air. In the episode, the main character (Will) had to take a poetry class, which he wasn’t thrilled about. He met a poetry- forward girl in the class that he tried to impress by telling her that he knew the famous poet “Raphael De La Ghetto”. Will promised the girl that he would get Raphael to perform at their school, but it turned out to be his butler in an Afro and dashiki telling old war stories. I am a poet, as well and I found this episode to be hilarious. I thought it would be a funny and fun way to involve multiple aspects of myself into one! Read more>>
