We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dylan Peggin. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dylan below.
Dylan, appreciate you joining us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
Coming up with a YouTube channel name that stuck was one of the earliest hurdles I had to overcome when I started The Record Spinner because you want a name that is simple and people will remember. I see it as something people can spend too much time coining because the reality is once you’re off to the races flaunting your craft, that name is going to stick with you and you want to make sure its a banner you’re comfortable being under for as long as you have it. As silly as this will sound, I chose “The Record Spinner” because I could identify as one, and quite frankly, no one else on YouTube had a channel with the name so it seemed safe to use!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Ever since I saw the band KISS on TV when I was 2, I became completely enamored with music. From there, my parents were able to pass down their music tastes to me (Black Sabbath, Genesis, Yes, Rush). To me at such a young age, vinyl records were mystical objects of wonder, everything down to the science of how this round disc could play music. I always appreciated the format but it wasn’t until my later high school years where I saw what Jack White and his label Third Man Records were doing to expand the limits of the format and it inspired me to start seriously collecting. After a few years, I started to feel this urge to connect with people who shared the same enthusiasm as I did with music and vinyl. So in 2018, I started The Record Spinner as a mere hobby, uploading videos every week about my collection and the artists I loved. Ironically when COVID hit in 2020, I became a YouTube partner, obtained my first sponsorships, and everything started to grow.
I’m thankful for all of the fortunes that came with stumbling upon an outlet where I could express my passion and connect with people. Anytime people talk to me about pondering on starting a channel themselves, my immediate answer is “just do it” because that’s exactly what I did. Regardless of what accolades that came with the venture, I’m still a record collector just like everyone else.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
One thing that many creative people dread experiencing let alone thinking about is creator’s block, hitting brick walls with no substance of inspiration or creativity. Perhaps the notion that this venture I pursue is fueled by my hobby/passion is what never made the well run dry in terms of coming up with fresh content ideas. Being a music lover means that you have your preferences in tastes, having favorite artists/albums, and learning the ins and outs surrounding them. As for collecting vinyl, I became with the science of the format, learning so much about mastering engineers and pressing plants. You bring all those corners together and it goes to show that the well never runs dry in terms of coming up with content ideas. I find it crazy that seven years in the game, I’m still finding stones to turn.

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Before I went about making YouTube content, I was inspired by many channels I found joy in watching. While I liked the professionalism and presentation of Vinyl Rewind, I also liked the humble/down to earth nature of Channel 33RPM. My goal was to find a good in-between, something that could be taken seriously but approachable at the same time.
