We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sam Schwartz. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sam below.
Alright, Sam thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
Being in the video production and creative world, coming up with fresh, exciting ideas and concepts is the norm. However, for some reason coming up with names or titles is a massive weakness of mine, and I think its because I tend to overthink those kinds of things alot. Blacksail came from my love of old world colonial ships and the era that they came from. I also needed something to stand out, and be unique, and I feel like our name does just that.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My other company SchwaaFilms is mainly an automotive based video production company and brand. Because I was so heavily involved in that sector people truly didn’t know that I could do things beyond Automotive content, however I didn’t want to close up SchwaaFilms because its been around for so long and is still very successful to this day, so I will never close it. This is where Blacksail Productions comes in, the full service video production company that does it all, in every field. A distinctive difference in the type of content that is created and the type of clientele base.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source of new clients for us has no doubt been word of mouth. Our reputation in the market is incredible which I think has attributed to that. We pride ourselves on top tier communication which clients tend to believe is one of the best things about us. Apart from that our extreme patience, understanding, hard work and of course creativity are just some things which helps us retain old clientele and gain new ones.

Any advice for managing a team?
Open, honest, and constant communication has been a staple in managing teams and maintaining morale. Having those hard conversations with employees, or sub-contractors is never a great thing, but its what helps to maintain a healthy working relationship with those people, who really are the backbones of your business in the first place. Also, being lighthearted and fun at work helps a lot, as well as maintaining a constant creative environment.
