Every once in a while we have the good fortune of working on a project that we feel truly matters, a project that we’ll still be thinking about years from now. Maybe even something we can imagine telling our grandkids about – surely you’ve had moments like that where something you did in your professional life really mattered?

There have been three recent projects that hold a special place in my heart, mainly because of the remarkable leadership and creativity demonstrated by the directors with whom I have collaborated. I had the pleasure of working with Gianfranco Fernández-Ruiz, Radha Mehta, and Pablo Riesgo, all of whom have truly made an impact on me as an editor. Read more>>

Throughout my creative journey, I was always motivated by stories behind creation and culturally driven work. From the beginning of my teenage years I have been extremely passionate about the still ongoing battle of equality and women’s rights. In recent years I have been working on a personal project called Red Me Out which discusses the female experience, female sexuality, inequality, women’s health and medical discrimination, mistreatment through diverse mediums, including digital design, but also carefully crafted oil paintings. The most meaningful project that I have worked on is the current project I am working on now. I am working on an EP/Album tentatively titled “Revolutionary Summer.” with a planned release date in late August. Although I have only been releasing music professionally for about a year and half, I have written songs, poems, and spoken word pieces for a little over a decade. Read more>>

I think the thing that makes what we do unique is that we get to be a part of so many special occasions. We have created pieces for baby showers, weddings, birthday parties, and everything in between. We have had the honor of knowing baby names before anyone else, creating special pieces for retirements/births/graduations, and being involved in the decor for all kinds of parties and events. The most meaningful project I have worked on is my EP “ILLA CITY SUMMERS” coming out July 14th. This project displays the life of a young star moving through the summertime in Kansas City Missouri as a new mother. I display how I am able to balance both parts of myself as an artist and a mom to become the more well rounded woman I am today. Read more>>

I can’t name just one, but for me it’s portraits. It’s fulfilling as an artist to see someone cry tears of joy over the artwork I have produced of their loved one. The first portrait I drew was of my wife from a photo that my guitar teacher had taken (with my 35mm) before he passed. That’s where it all started. I had only done one prior portrait (of myself) in High School. The likeness was there, so that was a pretty special one. I did a portrait of my cousin for her two children as a gift on the first holiday without her. Read more>>

Every project that I’ve worked on has been meaningful and personal in some way. Very recently, however, my latest play In The Woods Somewhere has been close to heart and the source of my focus because of its content and how it highlights where many people — including myself — were and are when discussing race in America. So a bit on the backstory: During 2020 I, like many others, was deeply upset by the unjust killings of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd, and countless other black Americans, as well as the increasing racial tension and violent spiral this country goes through. On February 7, 2012, I walked into the auditorium at Women’s Huron Valley Correctional Facility for the first time to gather with an ensemble of women who were incarcerated there and see if working with theatre, specifically Shakespeare, could have a positive impact on their lives. As the members of this pilot ensemble trickled in, one woman came over to me and asked, “What IS Shakespeare?” I told her that I didn’t know; Read more>>

One of the most meaningful projects I have worked on is the Artist Mother: Prolific Creativity Art Show at the Medicine Factory in downtown Memphis this past February. I had been wanting to do something bigger and be able to support/ feature other local artist mothers as well as create awareness around mental health for mothers. It turned out to be a wonderful event with a lot of support. Read more>>

My most meaningful project apart from my newer releases I’m working on would have to be my Debut Album “Breakthrough.” All my projects I work on I’m super proud of and mean so much but this project was the most challenging, overwhelming, emotional, anxiety-ridden, heart-wrenching yet longest project I’ve done to date. This album took over two years in the making. From early 2020 to mid 2022. It goes through everything I went through for those two years, how I was feeling. It tells a story from start to finish. In early 2021 I got to act in a show that I’ve seen professionally in NYC before and had admired for so long. It’s called “By the Way, Meet Vera Stark” by the great Lynn Nottage, one of the few black female playwrights out there being produced regularly and consistently. Read more>>

My most meaningful project that I have experienced is returning to the beauty school I graduated from as an advisor and member of the curriculum development board. Begin able to share my journey in our industry, being honest about the struggles and successes with the future cosmetologists hopefully inspires the kids as I once was. Recently I was asked to be a judge for the State Level Skills Competition for Ohio. Being able to see the younger generations, ideas, visions, and creativity was a humbling experience. Read more>>

Last year I released a pair of full length albums, “The Cutting Room Floor” and “Automata” all of which I wrote, played, recorded, mixed, and mastered myself (27 songs in total). Accompanying artwork for each song on “The Cutting Room Floor” was hand drawn and for each song on “Automata” was generated by DALL E 2, an OpenAI generative image creator. Read more>>

My most meaningful project was my Survivor’s Journey collection (c. 2021). The collection is my artistic trek in healing from domestic violence. I share the story/inspiration behind each piece in the description of the artwork on my website. I’ve also shared them on my social media platform. I’m grateful for the kinship, validation, and strength that other survivors have found in the collection. Creating it was my beauty for ashes. Read more>>

The most meaningful project I’ve worked on is my current project designing graphics for a clothing line. My life has really come full circle in the creative world. I originally went to college to pursue an art degree and after getting my associate’s, I wasn’t really sure what sort of job I could get. After a few changes in my major and going away to grad school, my passion projects ended up becoming my new stream of income. Read more>>

As an artist, I create meaningful connections working closely with my clients to help tell the stories of their lives. Most all of my work is travel inspired, and I think people really grasp on to that idea of wanting to bring beautiful memories they share with loved ones to the intimate spaces of their homes. My art has been an integral part of some of life’s biggest milestones and celebrations which grounds and enriches my life in a special way. Read more>>

In July 2020, The Together While Apart Art project was born amidst the worldwide pandemic, out of a desire to combat the isolation, loneliness, and unhappiness of a very disturbing time. The world seemed to be wavering. Economic worries, widespread racial unrest caused by systemic injustices, and the steady reminder of losses from COVID-19 was too much to bear. Unwilling to sit on the sidelines and just watch the suffering, I decided I needed to find an avenue to bring people together, even if it was in just a small way. Read more>>

Back in the fall of 2022, my band Earth Radio decided to try a different approach to songwriting to create our next album. The last 4 albums that we’ve made have mostly consisted of individually-written songs that Justin Avdek (bass/vocals) and I have brought to the group, where they are then molded by the others and seasoned with Earth Radio flair. I started life with something valuable. It drew people of all natures and almost immediately became the crux of my identity. It afforded me a platform that I did nothing of substance to earn. It is simultaneously the source of all the best and worst things I’ve experienced. Or rather, all the best things that I have ever pursued and all the worst things that have ever pursued me… Music. Talent. A beautiful voice especially is a beacon for those who admire and covet its strange power. Read more>>

I am heavily inspired by purpose projects. I think that art inherently creates meaningful experiences and that meaning becomes much more complex when the art is created with intention. The most meaningful projects in my artistic career have centered around creating memorial pieces for my collector of friends, family members, and beloved pets. It is a profound honor to be entrusted with the task of capturing their essence and immortalizing their presence on paper. Definitely Command! Season 1 was a lot of work for both of us. It put us outside of our comfort zones and we learned a lot of practical knowledge along the way about how the professional film world works. Command is about Ronnie Kitman, who is a lost young man trying to find his place in the world. Both of us really related to him as a character as we were both recent graduates of Towson University and trying to find jobs, Read more>>

As we’ve been in the Chicago scene for around five years, some of our most meaningful projects are the hometown shows that we throw to help bring community through our music. Project May Day is a registered nonprofit based in Historic Springfield, in Jacksonville, FL. Our mission is to support local nonprofits through creative fundraising events. We just hosted our inaugural Wandering Cocktail Party, an upscale, interactive guided tour of homes featuring signature cocktails, small bites, and lots of surprises. It’s essentially a murder mystery game hiding inside a property tour all wrapped up in a party! And the best part is that it was also a fundraising event with all profits donated to Hubbard House. Athena Project is an organization I love to work with. They “empower women through the arts,” and I’ve worked with them as an actor, a writer, and a teacher. My first meaningful project was my first album as a leader (Last Place in a Bear Race) which released in November of 2022. I wrote all the music over the course of my college studies. It was a long process of getting all the musicians together, securing studio time, rehearsing, recording, and mixing/mastering. There was a huge monetary and time cost involved with the project, so to see it all pay off at the release was a huge relief. Read more>>

There are actually two projects that have meant a great deal to me, and I’d be hard pressed to choose amongst them. Like choosing between children I’d imagine, although I don’t have kids. And I do think that is what creating a piece of art feels like. You are gestating, cultivating, ruminating, musing, and living and breathing with a piece that started out as simply a kernel in your mind – Read more>>

One of the most meaningful projects I’ve worked on has been writing and performing two songs for Golden Globe and Emmy Award Winning Hollywood Actress Jane Seymour and civil rights legend Xernona Clayton at the 2022 Celebrity Care Fest. Pursuing a creative career has meant that everything I do is meaningful in some way, which is something I absolutely love. The work I do as an artist and the music I release is fulfilling and meaningful, simply because it’s the way that I process the world around me and express my own human experience. But it’s also meaningful to others — some of my favorite moments have been hearing others say that my songs helped them through a dark period in their life, or accompanied them through their happiest moments. At the beginning of this year, I had my first-ever gallery exhibition, PLAYING TO AN EMPTY ROOM: A Visual Herstory of Live Music in a Lockdown. The collection featured 75 images taking during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic of bands from Akron, Cleveland, Columbus, Pittsburgh and Youngstown; telling the story about livestream concerts in a world of social distancing. Between the time invested in curating photos from over 60 galleries, thrifting and painting frames, framing prints and creating captions, titles, and an immersive exhibition, this was a true labor of love. I chose this question because I’ve got so many meaningful projects going on, the joke is that my side projects have side projects. Music for me is such a powerful tool – I use it therapeutically; I use it to create long-lasting friendships; I think about it in terms of being such an ancient uniting practice that there are amphitheaters thousands of years old created for the purpose of gathering in a public place to honor stories and song and truth.
