It’s easy to misunderstand something that doesn’t scream for your attention. Growing up, I was the quiet, overlooked kid. I was the one who sat in the back, doing everything right but never standing out. In church, it was the rebels who got noticed, the ones who wore short-shorts and needed saving. Some of the ways my work has been characterized is as “horror” or “erotic” or “fetish” art, and I don’t see my work that way at all. I understand that elements of my work, like nudity or blood, has some overlap with the horror and erotic genres, but when my art is categorized that way, it feels reductive and like the true intent of my work is being swept over. I think because both gore and sexuality are so demonized and pushed to the fringe of American society, people see a bit of blood or some genitals and decide right away ” this art belongs in this category”. I prefer to categorize my art as “Dark Surrealism”. How I explain to people that my work is decidedly NOT horror art or erotic art, is by pointing out the intent. Horror art is intended to scare. More often than not, my expertise in video production is mischaracterized by default due to the majority rule. In my line of business, the work I offer is overwhelmingly more comprehensive than any of my competitors. The term videographer alludes to an individuals ability to provide “full service” video production needs whether it’s utilizing a camera or editing footage. The term videographer translates to clients as being someone of a “hired gun”; someone who can execute a vision that is provided by someone else. A step above videographer is cinematographer and these professionals typically have what people call a “look” that brands can marry well with. The technical understanding is pretty standard across the board for videographer and cinematographer alike, however they typically must develop their craft in either the box of a certain look or in a box of a certain industry. The biggest way I have been mischaracterized is by my weight. I have had weight loss surgery (for health reasons) but for many years I was a plus size mermaid. There are events that will not hire my troupe because of that. Some people believe that these mythical beings should be a certain size.
