We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Yencil a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Yencil, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
In my high school years I was amazed by how singers/rappers had the opportunity to fill stadiums of amazing fans and bring joy, happiness and fun to them. At school, I had written a song and recorded on tape. Back then that was the thing! One day at during lunch hours, a girl had listened to my tape and told me she was touch by it. That’s when I knew I wanted to learn more and pursue my dream.

Yencil, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Richie Yencil. I was born in Dominican Republic. Raised in Brooklyn,NY. Although, I consider myself versatile. I enjoy writing romantic love songs in english and spanish. My genre is Latin, mix of reggaeton, salsa, bachata, hiphop.
The music business was different 20 years ago. When I was 14 years old, I auditioned for a boyband named OnlyUz. I remember us practicing none stop and learning so much from eachother. For this reason, being in a musical group gave me the opportunity to meet many people like producers, dancers, photographers and other musicians in the industry and learn many things from them.
Today, as an independent artist. It wanted to share my music to the world. I wanted to go to stores and barbershops to promote my music. However, this time without a CD, instead I share my music with bar codes of apps where my music is available. For example, Spotify, iTunes, Amazone and so on.
I have worked with major artists such as Frankie Boy and Shyheim from Wutang which I’m very proud of. Having the opportunity to share my craft, the talent with pioneers is an amazing feeling. It’s a confirmation that I’m doing something good in the music industry, to feel that I belong here.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Having random people share stories on my social media; like listening my songs in their car or going to work, sharing on how my lyrics make them feel, relating to them, take them to a journey, a memory and so on. To me is the ultimate feeling. I cherish this very much .

Have you ever had to pivot?
I was working on an album and recently moved to another country. The type of music I was doing wasn’t as popular as I thought. Which lead me to adapt new styles and allowing me to perform in local areas and grow in the community. Making me gain more beautiful fans.
