We were lucky to catch up with Vicki Nguyen recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Vicki, thanks for joining us today. The first dollar your business earns is always special and we’d love to hear how your brand made its first dollar of revenue.
Mastering a new skill can be challenging, and learning sales tactics on top of that only adds to the difficulty. When I first started my journey in permanent makeup, finding my first client was a real struggle. People are naturally hesitant when it comes to altering their appearance, so it took several cancellations and a lot of persuasion before I finally landed my first booking through Greg’s list. After working with my first client, I was able to secure multiple bookings soon after, and my business really started to take off.

Vicki, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Meet Vicki Nguyen – a woman whose journey from struggling with her appearance to becoming a beacon of beauty and empowerment is nothing short of inspirational. From a young age, Vicki harbored a deep love for fashion and beauty. However, her journey was not without its challenges – she was driven to unleash her creativity and begin crafting her own designs.
Despite her initial struggles, Vicki soared to new heights in the Vietnamese community as a fashion designer. Her dedication to fostering culture and community service was honored by none other than California’s Senator Lou Correa. She graced the screens of multiple Vietnamese TV shows and magazines, but a pivotal moment led her to uncover a new passion – permanent make-up.
With a wealth of experience and ventures under her belt, Vicki made the bold choice to pursue her calling in permanent makeup full-time across Orange County and Los Angeles. Her signature style lies in her creative freedom, driven by the belief that every woman is inherently unique, and her designs should amplify that individuality. Whether crafting a hand-sewn garment bursting with joy or sculpting the perfect brows, Vicki is guided by instinct, creating pieces that speak to the soul.
Inspired by her own resilience and determination, Vicki now owns The Brows Academy and Artist Salon Suites, offering luxury salon suites for budding beautypreneurs. She believes in the infinite potential of each individual and encourages everyone to embrace their uniqueness, chase their dreams, and never give up. Remember, the sky is the limit when you believe in yourself like Vicki did.
Through her journey, Vicki discovered that her greatest joy lies in the transformative power of making others look and feel good about themselves. But her story is more than just about beauty – it’s a testament to the unwavering spirit of pursuing dreams and never giving up.
So to all the dreamers out there, take a page from Vicki’s book and remember these tips:
1. Your journey starts now – don’t wait for the perfect moment, seize it today.
2. Embrace your uniqueness – let your creativity shine through in everything you do.
3. Believe in yourself – even in the face of challenges, trust that you have what it takes to succeed.
Start now, pursue your dreams, and never give up – because just like Vicki, your success story could be waiting just around the corner.

How did you build your audience on social media?
Like many small business owners, I began with zero followers. To grow my following, I asked friends to follow and share my page. Eventually, I started asking clients to do the same. I also held giveaways to encourage people to tag and share my business with others before investing in ads. There are numerous free platforms and tactics available to help promote your business.
For those just starting out, my advice would be to be patient and consistent. Building an audience on social media takes time, so don’t get discouraged if you don’t see immediate results. Focus on creating quality content, engaging with your followers, and being authentic in your interactions. And most importantly, have fun with it! Social media should be a platform for creativity and connection, so enjoy the process of building your audience and engaging with your followers.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
The journey to entrepreneurship is a challenging one. I faced numerous struggles that are often unseen, from team building to navigating the complexities of city regulations, permits, and construction. The list of obstacles seemed endless. Ultimately, success comes down to your passion, purpose, and determination to reach your destination. Without a clear understanding of your “why,” it’s easy to give up when faced with tough times. Knowing your purpose will provide you with the resilience and discipline needed to persevere.
