We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Uriah Ortiz. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Uriah below.
Uriah, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
I’m happy being a business owner, but it’s a different kind of happiness. It’s not the comfort or predictability people usually associate with a ‘real job.’ It’s purpose-driven. I get fulfillment from building something that supports my family, creates opportunities for others, and solves real problems in my community.
Do I ever wonder what it would be like to clock out at 5 p.m. and not think about work? Sure—especially on the hard days. But I don’t envy it. Owning a business means the responsibility never really shuts off, but neither does the sense of ownership, growth, or impact.
A ‘real job’ gives you stability. Entrepreneurship gives you meaning, accountability, and the chance to build something that lasts. For me, the trade-off is worth it. This isn’t just what I do….it’s who I am.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Uriah David Ryan Ortiz, aka UDRO, founder of Guardian Safe & Lock. At my core, I’m a builder—of systems, businesses, and solutions. I run a full-service locksmith and security company serving residential and commercial clients, and over time that work has expanded into safes, access control, surveillance, and integrated security solutions. What began as a hands-on trade evolved into a platform for building something much bigger.
I got into this industry through a mix of necessity, curiosity, and long-term thinking. I’ve always been mechanically and technically inclined, and I was drawn to work where results matter immediately—where your skill directly solves real problems. Security is a field where trust, competence, and execution aren’t optional. You either do it right, or you don’t belong. That standard shaped how I operate and how I built my company.
Today, Guardian Safe & Lock provides locksmith services, door hardware, safes, access control systems, CCTV, and security consulting. But more than that, we provide peace of mind. People call us during stressful moments—lockouts, break-ins, business expansions, or when they’re protecting something that truly matters. We solve problems where reliability, speed, and integrity make the difference.
What sets us apart is how seriously we treat professionalism in a trade that’s often underestimated. We emphasize training, documentation, systems, and customer experience. We don’t cut corners, we don’t sell fear, and we don’t disappear after the job is done. Our approach to security is layered, practical, and tailored to real-world risk.
In addition to running the company, I also create content across three YouTube channels: Guardian Safe & Lock, Guardian Approved, and UDROpreneur. Each serves a different purpose—showing real-world security work, reviewing and testing products, and sharing the behind-the-scenes realities of building and running a business. Education and transparency are important to me, and those platforms allow me to pull back the curtain on an industry most people only see when something goes wrong.
What I’m most proud of is building a company that creates real opportunity for others while earning long-term trust in the community. We’ve grown from a small operation into a multi-department business with skilled technicians, project teams, a retail presence, and a growing education and media component. Watching people on my team develop confidence, mastery, and ownership in their work is something I value deeply.
What I want potential clients, partners, and followers to know is simple: this brand is built on competence, accountability, and long-term thinking—but it’s also built to scale. We’re not here for quick wins or short-term visibility. The goal is to expand aggressively and intelligently, build repeatable systems, develop leaders, and turn Guardian Safe & Lock into a household name across Texas and beyond. That growth will come from doing the fundamentals better than anyone else—execution, trust, education, and consistency—so that when people think about security, they think of us first. We’re building something meant to last, and we’re just getting started.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
I didn’t start the business with traditional funding or institutional support. I was denied by virtually every bank and lender I approached—not just in the early days, but for years afterward, even as the company grew, built a reputation, and produced consistent cash flow. Access to capital was one of the biggest obstacles from the beginning.
The only outside funding I ever took was a very small loan—just a couple thousand dollars—from a family friend when I first started. That money went directly into basic tools and machines, and once it was spent, I was left with about $300 in my bank account. That was the real starting point.
From there, everything was built through execution. Growth came fast, but it wasn’t funded by leverage—it was funded by long hours, aggressive effort, reinvestment, and a strong team culture. We pushed hard, reinvested what we earned, and focused on building systems and accountability early. As a result, we were able to grow the business significantly year over year without relying on bank financing.
Because traditional lending wasn’t available, we operated lean and avoided high-interest online programs that would have slowed us down long-term. That constraint forced discipline and sharper decision-making. Guardian Safe & Lock wasn’t built on debt—it was built on persistence, execution, and a team willing to outwork the limitations in front of us. That foundation is what allows us to scale aggressively today.
Do you have multiple revenue streams – if so, can you talk to us about those streams and how your developed them?
Yes—we’ve been very intentional about building multiple, complementary revenue streams. At the core is our primary service business: residential and commercial locksmithing, automotive locksmithing and car key programming, access control and CCTV, and safe sales and service. That foundation gives us consistent, high-trust service revenue.
In our retail operation, customers primarily come in to drop off locks to be rekeyed, purchase locking hardware, have keys cut, open small safes, or buy car keys and remotes—which we then program directly to their vehicles. The retail side creates steady walk-in traffic, immediate service revenue, and long-term customer relationships that often lead to additional service work.
On the commercial side, we design and install cloud-based access control and surveillance systems that generate recurring monthly revenue through ongoing software, monitoring, and service agreements, creating predictable cash flow beyond one-time installations.
Beyond direct operations, we’ve also built an education and media arm through three YouTube channels—Guardian Safe & Lock, Guardian Approved, and UDROpreneur. Those platforms build brand authority, drive inbound leads, support partnerships, and long-term monetization opportunities, while supporting the core business rather than distracting from it.
The key is that none of these streams exist in isolation. Each one reinforces the others—retail supports service work, installations create recurring revenue, and media builds trust and demand across the entire brand. The goal has never been side hustles, but a durable, scalable security ecosystem built for long-term growth.
