We were lucky to catch up with Stephen Evans recently and have shared our conversation below.
Stephen, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I decided that I wanted to pursue music professionally and put a band together called Mean Season when I was in college back in the late 80’s. I have always loved music since I was a young kid due to my incredible musical family. My father was a traveling professional musician for most of his life in his group called The Four Saints, and so was my older brother during 80’s, 90’s and 2000’s. My mother also loved to sing in the choir and was professionally trained. So I had a lot of influence to end up on this path no matter how much I fought it growing up.
Watching my brother play music with his band influenced me to try and start a band while in Tallahassee, FL. It was an indie rock band that did pretty well in and around that college/capitol city. After a brief stint in Atlanta, I moved to Asheville, NC where I only played music for fun for the longest time. 9 years after moving here, I decided to try again and have been going strong ever since. It’s never too late to live the life you want to live and pursue your dreams.
Stephen, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Well, I got into the music business with great influence by my family. They never pushed me, but have always supported me in my endeavors. Their main influence is due to their love of creating and performing music.
The only way to get into the creative arts is to give it your all. To really buckle down and have a solid plan with regard to the way others have had the most success in pursuing this career. Having role models and doing research that you use to guide your career is very important. It saves you a lot of steps and missteps.
What I do is create. I write music that I enjoy creating and hearing. I write songs that mean a lot to me that I hope others can connect to and feel. What sets me apart is that I don’t try to follow trends or write music that I think people will want to hear. I only try to create music that I enjoy. I never try to sound like anyone else or follow niches that are trendy or popular. What you get is totally me and not manufactured. I am most proud of my songs and the creativity I put into them. And what keeps me interested and excited is that I am always learning new ways to accomplish it. And when my band gets a hold of my songs, their input helps to reach an even higher level of wonderful.
