We recently connected with Sion Kwak and have shared our conversation below.
Sion, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
One of the most meaningful memories from when I first started learning tattooing was practicing on my mother. It meant a lot to me that she trusted me enough to let me do one of my early pieces on her.
Those early experiences have stayed with me, and through years of practice and experience since then, I’ve gradually developed my own style.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Sion, and I’m a tattoo artist based in Los Angeles. My work is rooted in ornamental detail, color, and Eastern visual elements, but what I care about most is making sure that each piece feels personal to the person who carries it.
To me, what I offer isn’t just the tattoo itself, but the process of translating someone’s thoughts, memories, and emotions into something visual and lasting. I believe many of my clients come to me not just for a beautiful tattoo, but because they’re looking for something meaningful and thoughtfully created. Some people arrive with a very clear idea, while others come with only a vague feeling or story. I really enjoy the process of helping shape those ideas into something both beautiful and personal.
If there’s something that makes my work a bit different, I think it’s the balance I try to maintain between detail, flow, and meaning. I pay close attention to how a design sits on the body, how it moves with the body’s natural lines, and how different elements connect to form a cohesive composition. At the same time, I believe the work should ultimately feel emotionally connected to the person wearing it.
One of the things I’m most proud of is that over time, my work has started to be recognized as having its own distinct voice. Getting to this point took many years of practice, consistency, and the trust of my clients. What I’m most grateful for is that people connect with my work not only because it looks beautiful, but because it resonates with them on a deeper level.
If there’s one thing I hope potential clients or followers understand, it’s that I take every piece very seriously. Even if a design may appear delicate or decorative on the surface, I always want it to carry intention, care, and a sense of individuality. For me, tattooing isn’t just about creating a beautiful image—it’s about creating something that will remain meaningful over time.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
(can we pivot the question a bit to something like “what’s the important factor in building your reputation in the market”?)
I believe the most important factor in building my reputation in this industry and among the clients has been consistency. Over a long period of time, I’ve focused on developing my work and refining my style. That consistency has helped people gradually recognize and understand my work.
Trust with my clients has also been a very important part of it. Tattooing is an extremely personal process, and it’s something that stays with someone for a long time. Because of that, I always try to approach each piece with great care. I believe that sincerity has been felt by my clients, and over time it has naturally built trust.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
One of the most rewarding moments for me as an artist is when someone truly connects with a piece I’ve created. Some clients share the reasons they want a tattoo or the personal stories behind it, and it feels very meaningful when I’m able to translate those emotions or stories into a visual piece.
It’s also very special knowing that people continue to carry the work with them over time. The idea that something I created can remain meaningful to someone for many years is one of the most rewarding aspects of being a tattoo artist.
