We were lucky to catch up with Shunttina Edge recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Shunttina , thanks for joining us today. Often outsiders look at a successful business and think it became a success overnight. Even media and especially movies love to gloss over nitty, gritty details that went into that middle phase of your business – after you started but before you got to where you are today. In our experience, overnight success is usually the result of years of hard work laying the foundation for success, but unfortunately, it’s exactly this part of the story that most of the media ignores. Can you talk to us about your scaling up story – what are some of the nitty, gritty details folks should know about?
Starting a mobile painting party business was a dream I knew I had to pursue, but like any entrepreneurial journey, it wasn’t without its challenges. I faced numerous barriers, from finding reliable customers to scaling beyond my local area. However, persistence, creativity, and a willingness to adapt allowed me to turn these obstacles into opportunities.
One of the first barriers I encountered was building a customer base. Unlike traditional art classes, mobile painting parties are all about convenience for the client, which meant I needed to find people who not only loved art but also loved the idea of hosting an art experience in their own homes or venues.
Marketing was another challenge. I had to get creative, using social media, word-of-mouth referrals, and local partnerships to spread the word. Budget constraints often meant I had to be my own designer, which stretched me thin at times.
Logistics also proved to be a headache in the beginning. Transporting all the art supplies and setting up at different locations each time presented challenges with organization and timing. I quickly learned the importance of preparation, refining my setup and teardown process to make it more efficient.
One of the best decisions I made was to offer painting kits as an option. This opened up a whole new market for people who wanted to host their own painting parties at home without me physically being there. It allowed me to scale my business by offering something tangible and pre-prepared. It also meant I could take on more customers at once, as the kits were a way to expand beyond my physical limitations.
I prioritized creating a memorable experience. I knew if customers had a great time, they would tell their friends and would hire me for more events. Word of mouth became my best marketing tool, and I leaned into it by asking satisfied clients for reviews and referrals.
ne of the most important lessons I learned was that scaling doesn’t happen overnight. It requires patience and constant learning. I had to overcome the fear of failure and recognize that every setback was just a stepping stone to something greater.
Now, my mobile painting party business is doing better, and I’ve diversified my offerings with the painting kits, giving me more freedom and flexibility. The barriers that once seemed insurmountable became the very things that pushed me to grow. Whether it was logistics, marketing, or client relationships, I learned to toughen up, face each challenge head-on, and keep moving forward.
In the end, resilience, adaptability, and a focus on delivering value were the key elements that helped me scale my business.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
It all started when I realized that people love the idea of sipping wine and unleashing their inner Picasso, but most don’t want the hassle of going to a class. I thought, “Why not bring the fun to them?” And just like that, my mobile painting party business was born.
Let’s be real—life is busy, and coordinating a night out can feel like organizing a small wedding. People want fun experiences, but they don’t want the stress of finding parking, hiring a babysitter, or worrying about whether their favorite wine is on the menu. That’s where I come in. I take the stress out of the equation and bring the painting party directly to my clients’ homes, offices, or wherever they want to have a good time.
The main problem I’m solving is convenience. I create an experience that’s customized, hassle-free, and best of all—fun! Whether it’s a birthday, bachelorette, or just a “we survived another workweek” celebration, my mobile painting parties give people a creative outlet without having to leave the comfort of their home (or sweatpants).
Oh, and for those who can’t make it to an event, I created painting kits—a DIY solution for people who want the full painting experience without me physically being there. You get everything you need in a kit delivered right to your door. It’s like a party in a box. What I’m most proud of about my mobile painting party business is that I’ve built something that brings people together in a unique and meaningful way.

Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
I started my mobile painting party business with just $500 of my own money, covering basic supplies like easels, canvases, brushes, and paint. That initial investment paid off quickly when I hosted my first painting party and tripled my money. With $1,500 in hand, I reinvested in more supplies. Since then, the business has been self-sustaining, growing organically through word-of-mouth and repeat clients. That initial $500 was the spark that set everything in motion.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
At a large painting event, I realized I had forgotten one of the most essential supplies—white paint. Rather than panic, I quickly pivoted and adjusted the entire color scheme of the artwork to work without it. I creatively reimagined the design to maintain its vibrancy, and to my relief, no one even noticed the change. The event went off smoothly, and the participants were thrilled with their finished pieces. This experience taught me the importance of adaptability and creative problem-solving in running a business.
