We were lucky to catch up with Sabrina Rosiles recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sabrina, thanks for joining us today. Your ability to build a team is often a key determinant of your success as a business owner and so we’d love to get a conversation going with successful entrepreneurs like yourself around what your recruiting process was like -especially early on. How did you build your team?
I opened up my gym when I was 24 years old. I literally started from the bottom and worked my way up, growing more and more year-by-year.
This was 2014, before fitness became a “thing” and before social media became a place of learning, free resources and opportunity.
.
To be honest with you, I didn’t start taking my business management seriously until the end of 2021 when I met one of my mentors.
.
What has carried me this far into my growth is the culture I created these past 10 years.
What has helped me create this culture is the women that not only work with me, but the members that join me, that also create the welcoming and comforting environment of New Mind New Body Fitness.
.
Since 2016 and 2017, my coaches, Andrea and Cristina have stood by my side in creating a safe space for our members.
I just recently hired a part-time manager that works alongside my assistant and my business is thriving more than ever.
I never had the money and resources to hire the help that I needed, but that should have been the focus. If I can go back in time, I would have done that sooner.
We can’t do it alone, and we can’t go far in this journey by ourselves.
The hardest part is finding people that you trust, people that see your vision and treat your business like their own.
You have to offer your employees, partners and people that work with you, something that they can’t find anywhere else.
You have to pour into the people you work with so they can pour back into your customer care.
Your team is your biggest asset, treat them well and have their best interest in mind.
Your mindset shouldn’t be BOSS MENTALITY, but more as a leader. You want your team to feel like they’re growing with you.
I am blessed for the group of women that I have a long my side, not just my coaches and team, but all my members and clients.
We all come in unity, and create a beautiful community inside our gym and within our city.
Sabrina, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started my business at a young age, 24, when I had a spiritual awakening.
I was gifted a book that made me find purpose and eliminated all fear from my mind.
My purpose was to open up a gym and within three months of journaling my goals, I got my first set of keys to my gym.
.
I literally had nothing when I opened up my gym. I was with a negative bank account, no credit, no investors, no experience, no mentors, no education. I ended up getting a personal loan of $4000 which was enough for a deposit on my 400 sq space and used equipment from yard sales and craigslist.
.
Two months later I moved into a bigger space, one year later I moved into another space and one year after that, 2017, I am moved into a beautiful 4000sq store front commercial property in North Fontana.
.
I didn’t have the best body, I didn’t have the best equipment, I didn’t have the best gym set up, but what I did have was a big, huge heart to help my members, and that heart carried me through the hardest years of my life.
.
My biggest blessing was when Covid hit in 2020.
I became a mom in January, and then I had to pivot my business because of COVID-19.
I began doing online challenges which positively impacted my gym for the years that follow.
I used loan money to grow my business, as far as merchandise, supplements, mentorships and more.
.
Another asset to my growth is being involved in my community and giving back in every way I can. Every year we host a variety of workshops, fundraisers, food drives, school drives, clothes drives and so much more.
.
I am a huge believer in giving without expectations, but I also know that I’ve been blessed because of all that you do as a community.
.
We have to do our part.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Your clientele is your billboard. Your customer service and the things that are said from word-of-mouth is your biggest reputation.
I’ve made many mistakes in the past 10 years and I know I’ve lost many customers based on my aggressiveness, lack of professionalism, people who get offended by things I say, miscommunications and women who feel like they don’t get the services that they want.
I’ve learned that not everyone is going to like you. Not everyone is going to share the same perspective as you do but I have learned that the people who are meant to be with you, will stay.
I know we want to make our customers happy, but don’t sacrifice your values and beliefs too deep to the point you can’t be real or be yourself.
Eventually, faking it will get old, and it will shift the dynamic of your business.
Even though I’ve made mistakes in the past, majority of all my past members will always say the same things about me.
They say I have a tough exterior, but deep down, I truly care and everything I say and do is for the good intentions.
I’ll take that!
Have you ever had to pivot?
Pregnancy forced me to pivot it in my business.
I used my pregnancy as an asset.
I used my pregnancy to market myself as a coach, a mom and a business owner.
I used my pregnancy to motivate women who want to get pregnant, are pregnant or who are postpartum.
I was afraid that getting pregnant with slow me down, would slow down my business and my cliental, but what it did was give me opportunity to grow in a different direction, to attract a different market and to prove to my peers that I can be more resilient than ever.
.
My pregnancy journey was amazing, and what was even better was my postpartum journey and getting into the best shape of my life after both of my children.
