We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jamie Hagiya . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jamie below.
Jamie , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you share a story that illustrates an important or relevant lesson you learned in school
My Psychology Professor at USC, Dr. Kim Lindsey, said, “Whatever you do for work after you leave here, make sure you love it and are passionate about it and you’ll never work a day in your life”. After graduating from USC I played professional basketball in Europe. I decided to hang up my shoes after a couple seasons but was unsure of what path to pursue. I fell into CrossFit and landed the opportunity to open a gym with my sister. Owning Torrance Training Lab with her allows us both to live our passion by helping others improve their lives through health, fitness, and community.

Jamie , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Torrance Training Lab is an inclusive community based gym that helps improve the health and fitness of our members. We offer CrossFit classes, Bootcamp, HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training), Personal/Small Group Training, and a Fit Over Fifty Class for those looking to build strength and mobility as they get older.
Our coaches care about every single person that walks through our doors and are motivated to help them achieve their goals. All fitness levels are welcome. Whether you’ve been working out for years, or have never set foot inside a gym, our mission is to teach our athletes to move well and push their limits. Ultimately, this builds their strength and improves confidence in every aspect of their lives. We have some fun along the way too.
The thing we’re most proud of is the culture we’ve fostered and the community we’ve helped build. Everyone in our gym is friendly and welcoming. Our home is your home. We’d love to have you join us!

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Being genuine and vulnerable makes you more relatable. I’ve owned a gym for the past 11 years and to this day I struggle with body image and lack motivation to workout on some days. Instead of keeping that to myself I share those feelings with others. It does no good to pretend to be anything but your authentic self. More often than not, I find this vulnerability allows others to seek me out so that they have a safe place to be themselves as well. I take a lot of pride in providing that space for my community.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Like so many businesses, we were hit hard by the restrictions put in place by the covid pandemic. The relationship between our athletes and coaches thrives on a personal connection that became nearly impossible to maintain. After completely shutting down, our efforts ranged from leading workouts online to limited outdoor workouts. While this put a strain on the member experience, our efforts showed them that we remained resolute in our commitment to them. As the world opened up again, our members came back to us in full force ready to return to the community we worked so hard to maintain while they were gone. We are forever grateful to our coaches and athletes that kept their faith in us.
