We recently connected with Ron Smith and have shared our conversation below.
Ron, appreciate you joining us today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
The art world is ever-changing. My background is graphic design, but after a long 29 year hiatus I picked up the brushes and started to paint again. Because I delve into so many genres of art, I focus on abstract, and realism as well.
In the realm of artistic exploration, I have found a new voice through the fusion of abstract textures and digital art. My creative journey is a voyage through the intricate interplay of these two mediums, where the physical and the digital converge to birth a world of captivating sensations and emotions.
Through digital art, I can manipulate, deconstruct, and reconstruct my abstract textures, allowing me to craft a visual narrative that transcends traditional constraints.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
As an artist, Ron is a storyteller, and his stories are etched in the abstract textures and pixels that make up his creations. With each piece, he strives to offer a glimpse into the depth of human emotion, the vastness of the abstract, and the endless possibilities of digital art. Ron’s work is a testament to the boundless potential of creativity, reminding us that art has the power to transcend boundaries, educate the soul, inspire the mind, and transform the way we perceive the world around us.
Recently Ron was chosen to go to France for a two week residency in October at Chateau Orquevaux. He is excited to be one of 28 creatives to participate in this adventure.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
After a 25+ year hiatus, after breaking both wrists in a motorcycle accident, I find joy and peace to finally paint again. It was my son Austin, who is also an artist, that gave me the inspiration to pick up the brushes again. Acrylic is my preference of mediums, but I love textures and other elements of textile to add depth to my works. This arduous adventure has given me the opportunity to put this journey back to visual arts on canvas, and on paper.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Though I still do graphic design, with all of the options on computers and phones, it is a fading profession. In the age of technology and how fast it is advancing, I have pivoted into merging my graphic design and visual arts and consider it “acrylic digital abstraction”.
