We recently connected with René Romero Schuler and have shared our conversation below.
René Romero, appreciate you joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I think I’ve known since kindergarten! I had a very enthusiastic teacher very boldly praised every piece of art created by the children in her classroom. I think that my soul just lit up from that and in my little child mind, I thought I want to get that reaction from people for the rest of my life, and seemingly all I have to do is change a blank white surface to something colorful and fun! I didn’t live with my parents, and ended up sending them a letter that said when I grow up, I’m going to be an artist and have my work in museums and I will drive a Rolls-Royce because it has my initials all over it! How funny! But my mission has never deviated, and I began working professionally, selling paintings before I even finished high school and this is the work I have always done

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m an abstract, figurative painter and sculptor. My work is all female figurative, and I work to create pieces that are whimsical, but with great emotional depth. I want the work to be relatable. In the sense that viewers can feel a little of themselves in the works, and feel a sense of being heard and understood. And ultimately, I want the work to feel empowering for girls and women in particular.

Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
I think I’m just a purist when it comes to creating art. I just don’t really understand NFT‘s, and I think the truth is that I don’t really want to. I like to just stay in my lane and work with my hands, creating vibrant, textural , tactile works, that people can experience in the real physical world. Additionally, I find that artists are falling victim to so many scammers that approach them claiming to want to buy images for NFT‘s or some such. If I had a dollar for every one of those emails, texts or Instagram messages, I would be doing quite well. They all seem to be scams and I think that’s just evil, and certainly gives a bad name to whatever positives NFT‘s can bring to the world and marketplace I just love doing what I do and I think I will stick with it

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I would say that my goal and mission in what I do, is to always do the absolute best work that I know how to do. I know that sounds simple, but it really isn’t. It’s easy to get caught up in doing what people want you to do rather than staying deeply connected in your own narrative in the work. I endeavor to always hold to that connection and only put works out in the world that I am fully engaged with and proud of. I think with that, natural evolutions occur in my œuvre and that is what matters the absolute most to me.
