Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to PME Ghost. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
PME, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
This year I made a promise to myself to be different to branch out. I’ve always made all kinds of different music behind the scenes but I was never comfortable releasing them for different reasons. Some songs were just way too vulnerable, others I just wasn’t confident that they would do well. Regardless of reasoning this new year has been nothing but motivation to reinvent myself and stand out from the crowd. I don’t just want to be another rapper from Baltimore. I want to change the way music is made here. Open everyone’s eyes to a whole new way of making music. Real, timeless music. Not just a feel good song for the week or summer.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started making music on my phone during the pandemic. As a way to vent and express my emotions that were screaming to get out. As we all did, I felt like I was losing my mind just sitting in the house. Without my usual distractions that life has to offer I was forced to sit and face all the things I had always hoped to ignore forever. Through healing I found a talent I never thought I would have. I always played around making songs for my friends but I never thought about taking it serious. However, after experimenting during that time alone, It opened my eyes that this might actually be what I’m supposed to be doing. I found a studio home after a failed attempt at college, found a job to fund everything and hit the ground running. Dropping My First project in 2021 titled “I can’t sleep” under the name “Ghost53va”. I have then since changed my name of course but I will never forget the timeless songs I released under that name. Before I gained a conscious of what’s good and what’s not.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
For a period I got too stuck on a “method”, a formula I thought was sure to make me break into stardom only to realize being an artist there is no perfect formula. It isn’t like going to school, getting a degree, and a job. It doesn’t have a 1, 2, 3 step plan for success. Everyone’s path is different. And the best way to find my path is being authentic not only to my audience, but to myself. I had to remember that this is my journey. It’s not about being perfect. In fact, Failures are a pathway to your own success. You have to find what works for you and what doesn’t. And work from what you know.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Becoming a father was a big change for me. I had to adjust. I had to refocus and make adjustments in my personal life in order to be a fit parent. It wasn’t just about me anymore. Not my goals or music, nothing mattered more than making sure my child was secure and well. It took some time to get a hang back on life. I continued making music as it was still my safe space, however, I did not peruse it still with the hopes of success. It just fell to the background and became a hobby. I was scared for a time that I would never get back into my craft 100%. Nonetheless I made it a priority in my life that this was what I needed to do. I spent time alone, Just me and my producer Tamira Slade, locked in the studio. A lot of long nights and early mornings until the confidence was back and I was ready to face the world again. Two years later goals have been reached and we’re only getting started.
