We recently connected with Phylicia Lee and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Phylicia, thanks for joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
The Club House came to me so naturally, it didn’t arrive all at once, but the pieces all came together like a puzzle. I have been an athlete almost my entire life, I started playing volleyball at the age of 8. As I grew older, I started to tap into my love of watching sports live – I love seeing athletes perform at the highest level; it’s so inspiring to and it really resonates with me. In addition to that, I started traveling abroad when I was in high school – so needless to say, I fell in love with it as well. Over the years I have lived in France and England, for different purposes and for different lengths of time, but they have all made me the person I am today. With all of those elements combined, my life journey is how my business has come about – The Club House is a travel, sports tourism and lifestyle brand. We plan travel around and inspired by major sporting events. That is exactly how I have traveled and love to travel to this day. We add in the community aspect as well – it’s about connecting with individuals and expanding your network of sports and travel fans! It’s more than just going to see a city or an event the way you view it on television or on social media, it’s about creating the most authentic experience that is reflective of you as a person and combining that with what the city or country has to offer. My own experience and passion lives in that perfect Venn diagram, and it is extremely fulfilling to help others in that same way. I have clients who are having life changing moments and that will always bring me joy.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I grew up in the world of sports, and I myself traveled for my own craft volleyball. When you have the opportunity to grow up as an athlete and be surrounded by athletes, it defines who you are and how you move throughout the world. I admire the discipline, passion, dedication, focus, and perseverance that you witness in athletes. I can confidently say that those are key pillars of my own character – those attributes developed over time and continue to cement themselves into my core being and principles. I’m truly grateful for being able to see the world through a different point of view, and that’s what comes with traveling. I’ve been able to immerse myself in various cultures, and I am proud of my accomplishments thus far! I’m proud of The Club House and it’s also the lens through which I see the world now – I’m consistently thinking of ways to share my story to inspire others. I love for my clients to pursue their love of sport and travel, and to do it in a way that feels authentic to their story. I want to curate experiences and to change lives, to make people smile. I also want to help potential clients understand that the trip you’ve been thinking about, it’s within reach.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I think there are several stories that I can tap into that illustrate resilience, but one that comes to mind is an early memory of working as an English Teaching Assistant in Lille, France. This was the first professional experience I had abroad, and while it was organized through a well-known program, it was still a small cohort of professionals selected each year. This was the first time I was moving abroad to live and work on my own, there was no support like during my study abroad semester – I made the entire transition by myself. In addition, I moved to a country where I knew the language and culture well, having studied it from grammar school through college including study abroad, but this was a major life event happening in my non-native language. That experience taught me so much resilience, patience, and the power of community. By the end of the program, I had met several of my friends who are like family today. It’s a true testament to your ability to push through discomfort and uncertainty while still seeing the positive way your life is being shaped. Teaching students, also takes patience, humility, kindness, and understanding – all of which add to that resilience factor.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I decided to pursue my MBA in 2018, so I had been out of the classroom setting for several years as I focused on my professional career. It was a major shift in the way that I functioned from to day to day, and even how I made time for friends and family. I was working full-time while pursuing my MBA part-time, and it sharpened my time management skills, it broadened by horizons, and it connected me to a network of driven individuals who strengthened my pursuit of greatness. I graduated in 2020 with my MBA with a concentration in Finance.
