We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Norma Ruffinelli. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Norma below.
Norma, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
One of the most meaningful projects I’ve worked on was a large, labor-intensive 3D mixed media painting created for an 85-year-old client who deeply connects with modern art.
What made this project truly special was not just the scale or the complexity, but the emotional connection behind it. At her stage in life, she wasn’t simply looking for decoration—she was searching for something that reflected presence, memory, and meaning.
Throughout the process, I approached the piece with a heightened sense of responsibility. My work often centers around emotional depth, especially through the expression of the human figure, and in this case, I wanted the painting to feel alive—something she could connect with daily, almost like a silent companion.
The process itself was very demanding. My 3D mixed media technique requires layers, texture, and precision—it takes significantly more time than traditional painting. But that intensity is part of what allows me to embed emotion into the work.
When the piece was completed, it wasn’t just a finished artwork—it was a shared experience. Knowing that something I created could bring comfort, reflection, and beauty into someone’s life at such a meaningful time made this project unforgettable for me.
It reinforced why I create art: not just to be seen, but to be felt.

Norma, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a contemporary mixed media artist based in San Antonio, Texas, specializing in large-scale 3D textured paintings that blend realism with sculptural depth. My work often centers around emotionally expressive female figures, animals, and symbolic elements that explore themes of presence, identity, and inner transformation.
My journey into art was not just about learning technique—it was about discovering a way to translate emotion into something tangible. Over time, I developed a distinctive 3D mixed media approach that allows me to build layers, texture, and dimension directly onto the canvas. This process is significantly more labor-intensive than traditional painting, but it enables me to create pieces that feel alive—works that invite both visual and physical engagement.
I create original works and also offer custom commissions for collectors who are looking for something deeply personal and meaningful. Many of my clients are not simply decorating a space—they are searching for a piece that reflects a moment, a feeling, or a story they want to live with. My role is to translate that into a visual experience that resonates on a deeper level.
What sets my work apart is the combination of emotional intensity and physical presence. The eyes of my figures are often the focal point—they are designed to connect with the viewer in a quiet but powerful way. At the same time, the textured, sculptural elements bring a sense of movement and depth that cannot be experienced through flat imagery.
I am most proud of the impact my work has on people. When someone tells me that a piece made them feel seen, understood, or even comforted, that is more meaningful than any technical achievement.
At its core, my mission is to create art that is not only seen, but felt—art that transforms a space and creates an emotional connection that lasts over time.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
One of the strongest examples of resilience in my journey has been continuing to grow as an artist despite limited exposure in traditional gallery spaces and the challenges of building recognition on my own.
For a long time, I created deeply personal and technically demanding work—especially my large-scale 3D mixed media pieces—but I didn’t always receive the visibility or validation that many artists rely on to grow. Platforms like Instagram were particularly challenging for me, and at times it felt like my work was not reaching the audience it deserved.
Instead of allowing that to discourage me, I shifted my focus inward. I committed to refining my craft, developing my own distinctive style, and creating work that felt honest and emotionally powerful, regardless of external recognition.
One moment that stands out was when I shared a recent painting on a local platform and received an overwhelming response—hundreds of comments and meaningful engagement in a short time. That experience reminded me that connection doesn’t always happen where you expect it, but when the work is genuine, it finds its audience.
Resilience, for me, has meant continuing to create with intention and belief, even when growth felt slow or uncertain. It has taught me that success is not only measured by visibility, but by the impact the work has on people and the consistency of showing up for your vision.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Yes, my creative journey is deeply driven by the desire to create work that connects with people on an emotional level and leaves a lasting presence in their lives.
My goal is not simply to produce visually appealing pieces, but to create art that feels alive—art that invites reflection, emotion, and personal interpretation. Through my large-scale 3D mixed media work, I aim to go beyond the surface of traditional painting by introducing texture, depth, and a sculptural quality that allows the viewer to experience the piece in a more immersive way.
I am especially drawn to the human figure, particularly the quiet strength and emotional depth expressed through the eyes. Much of my work explores themes of identity, inner transformation, and presence—moments where a person stands within themselves, even when everything around them may feel uncertain.
In addition, my mission is to elevate the perception of contemporary textured art into a more refined, high-end space. I want my work to exist not only as decoration, but as a statement—something that transforms a space and creates a meaningful connection over time.
Ultimately, what drives me is the idea that art has the power to be felt, not just seen. If someone can stand in front of my work and experience a moment of connection, reflection, or even quiet understanding, then I have fulfilled my purpose as an artist.
