We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nicole Hayre a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Nicole, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory of how you established your own practice.
Starting off on your own in a solo practice is not for the faint of heart, but it’s also not impossible. I charged into establishing my practice, the Cosmetic Dermatology Center, right after I finished my residency. Although I found it exciting, it was a lot of work and there was an element of uncertainty. Eventually I figured things out, and the practice grew into what it is today. I like to encourage others to take a chance and to do the same. Unfortunately, most doctors do not receive any sort of business training and are to nervous to have their own office. With the rise of private equity in medicine, I think it is becoming critical that physicians take better control of their industry again. I think more physician-owned practices would help.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Since I was a child I have always had a passion for science, research and beauty. Although a somewhat odd combination, I have been blessed to be able to have a career which combines all three! After I graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, I attended medical school, entered a dermatology residency and fellowship program, and became a board-certified dermatologist. During my fellowship training I was able to satisfy my desire to do research working on a project to help develop a blood assay for metastatic melanoma. Although my research was recognized with several awards, after graduating I decided to move on and open my own practice. Thankfully, several aesthetic companies recruited me to help with some of their research, so I was still helping to contribute to the scientific field while taking care of my patients.
Eventually, it was my decision to work with patients which would lead me to my most interesting research. After seeing some of the same patients for decades, and getting to know them well, I had an epiphany that their skin was reflecting their love lives. In other words, the ‘love glow” is real. This reignited my research bug and I conducted a pilot study in my office which showed that women with higher oxytocin (the “love hormone”) levels had more youthful looking skin. (Oxytocin which is produced in the skin protects it from inflammatory damage.) My peer-reviewed paper was the first to show this. As a dermatologist, I wondered if I could somehow bottle the love glow.
I founded EndoDerm Laboratories and set off to develop the World’s first medical grade skincare line formulated to have an oxytocin-like effect, Cutocin. Fortunately, I found a botanical that has been used in midwifery for centuries for it’s oxytocin properties, and I was able to create a skincare line with it. After years of work, I was granted a patent for my formulations! Cutocin has been a huge success in my office, and now I am working to introduce the rest of the Country to it.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
There is really not one story in particular that comes to mind, but rather how my journey with Cutocin has been going as a whole. Breaking through in the beauty industry has proven to be more difficult than I imagined. I thought since I have a truly unique, patented, effective skincare line that creating buzz would be fairly easy. In fact, it has been a serious of frustrations. In spite of this, I am determined to keep going. I know that when people try Cutocin, they love it. I just need to get enough people to try it!

Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
Understanding people and how important human connection is has helped me tremendously in my practice and by inspiring my skincare line. I think if you are able to really listen to people and have good conversations with them, even if they are brief, you will gain insight into what is effecting their health and in turn their skin.
