We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Nicol Cunningham. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Nicol below.
Hi Nicol, thanks for joining us today. The first dollar you earn in a new endeavor is always special. We’d love to hear about how you got your first client that wasn’t a friend or family.
In the month of August 2024, I landed my first client. I was working hard, reaching out via cold call emails and direct messages on Instagram, when I finally received a reply. It was with a slow-fashion company that I had done work as a content creator, but this time, they were interested in me managing their social media accounts. We chatted a few times over video call and got started right away. At the same time, I landed another client, who was also a company I worked with as a content creator. I was so excited, felt good about myself, and I had skills that were useful to other people. I was especially thankful for these two clients because they came at the right time financially for my husband and me. Getting to work for both those clients taught me a lot about the nuances of being a social media manager, and I’ve grown so much. I look forward to taking the lessons learned from both those experiences and using those lessons to help me give more value to new clients.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Nicol Cunningham, I’m 36 years old, I’ve been married for 12.5 years, and I am a content creator and social media manager. I got into content creation about five years ago when my love for thrifting and the idea of being an influencer sounded exciting and fun to me. What sets me apart is that I don’t take commission-based work, and I create content that feels relatable, authentic, and organic. I am most proud of a new series I started called sixty seconds or less. It’s the first time I’ve challenged myself to talk on subjects I feel passionate about, and that can be controversial. I provide short-form content for brands seeking to share their products in an organic way. I got into social media management after interning for a small, slow fashion company. After that, my husband and I decided to start our own digital marketing business. He works on web design, SEO, GEO, and Google Ads, and I work on social media management. We like it because we get to work together and we love helping small business have access to quality digital marketing without the high markup. We are most proud of our work with a local company called WOMMB. Their website is highly commended for it’s design and ease of use. Our company is called Greenline Digital.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source of new clients for us is word of mouth and recommendations from our current clients to new clients. Also, past experience working with companies as a content creator has helped land new clients because we’ve already established a working relationship in a closely related field. The majority of our current clients are people we already knew and wanted to work with us because of our good reputation.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I knew about how helpful social media management platforms can be. I recently started using one called Rella, and it’s amazing! I know most people use Later, but this platform Rella, has been a lifesaver with its built-in AI function. It cuts coming up with content ideas in half and makes it easy to collaborate with clients on their content calendars and posts. I wish I had known about it when I landed my first two clients; it would have made work simpler for me, and it would have made my clients happier.
