We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Michael James a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Michael, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I was sitting at my desk in my corporate finance job, thinking about music. I thought about the songs I have been writing. I thought about John Mayer and some of the other artists that inspire me. I knew I had to take a risk if I wanted to take music head on. I resigned from my job to pursue music as a career. It was a now or never kind of thing.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a songwriter and musician with over five years of music industry experience. I have been playing the guitar since the age of fourteen. I released my first mixtape at sixteen and my first album at twenty-one. I write original music and perform live at different events and venues. Bringing value to whoever I am doing business with is what is most important to me.
I am most proud of my recent EP titled This Just In. This four song project was released in October 2025. This is my first full band project and I am thankful for the musicians who contributed to it.
The main thing I want people to know about me is that I love the collaborative process. I enjoy working with other artists, whether it’s writing a song, producing a record or performing live.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The creative process. Whenever I create, I feel whole. Whenever I write a song, I feel accomplished.

Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
We are all creatives. Whether you are a musician, doctor or lawyer. Through our thoughts we create solutions. Through our ideas we create tangible things. We come from creation, so it is our will to do just that.
