We recently connected with Maidy Morhous and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Maidy thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. One of our favorite things to hear about is stories around the nicest thing someone has done for someone else – what’s the nicest thing someone has ever done for you?
In the artwork one gets many inquiries about their artwork, some legit some outright scams. My radar is always up for scams because I have had the honor of having g many over the years ( yes, that was sarcastic!).
I received a note on my website, not really an inquiry, stating that their father, who had just passed, had purchased an etching of mine from the 1970’s. I graduated in Printmaking and sculpture and for about 10 years after receiving my MFA sold my artwork to an International Art company in Beverly Hills, California. Their father had acquired one of my pieces and now the kids were asking a few questions about the work, because while he lay in bed his last few months he wanted it positioned across the room so he could view the piece. It brought tears to my eyes that he had enjoyed the artwork and that his children had contacted me to relate the story. Its the little things that can be so special!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
An accomplished printmaker and sculptor as well as painter, Maidy Morhous was born ìn New York and currentlv creates out of her studio thirtv minutes north of San Dieao. Morhous received her Master of Fine Arts dearee while studvina at Stanley Hayter’s Atelier 17 in Paris in the mid-1970s. Before returning to the States. she traveled to Italv to further her studies in castina techniques at the Fonderia Artistica-Marinelli Foundry in Florence.
Morhous expresses herself through the medium of bronze, which allows her to portray extremes, from the soft flow of water to the harsh asphalt pavement of our world. Her work encompasses the pop art concept of presenting commonplace objects as fine art in a very permanent medium. It is meant to engage viewers and to allow them to contemplate and pull from within, to disengage for a moment from the outside world. She also evokes emotion through her paintings – strong, powerful images, or more likely abstraction of images
Maidy Morhous is currently showing internationally in museum and gallery exhibitions; her work can also be found in public and private collections in Japan, England, Europe, Australia and Canada.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
In 2013 I was on vacation in Japan, a country i was not sure would be that exciting to visit after Egypt, China and Vietnam, but my grandmother, who had visited years ago had a great love for the people and country. I soon learned why. We were situated ready to visit a national museum in the mountains south of Tokyo when the first tremor hit. The following days we shook with what was aptly named The Great Earthquake at 9.8
A Tsunami hit the north of Japan and thousands were killed. I flew home a week later after flights resumed and created 3 sculptures for the people of Japan. The city of Riverside is sister city to Sendai, where the Tsunami hit the hardest. In 2016 I flew back to dedicate the sculptures, after Riverside paid for flying them over, and stayed with two Japanese families. They were so gracious and welcoming. We traveled to the site of the Tsunami where it came ashore and had lunch amd a tea ceremony in the only home still standing in the area. The people are both resilient, kind and very generous and it taught me that one might get knocked down but will again stand, persevere and move on.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Beyond having a passion for creating be it sculpture, painting, printmaking g, photography, I have a desire to beco.e know to fellow artists. This desire fuels me to enter art shows, exhibitions at Museums ( once a year i am invited to display art at the Metropolitan Museum in Tokyo), and gallery representation. The sale of my art is secondary- it is the energy and joy I feel while creating that drives me forward.
