We recently connected with Maddi McKenney and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Maddi thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
I am extremely grateful that I’ve been able to take my creativity and everything that I have learned in my field and translate that to my full time job. I work in creative marketing, I’m a social media manager and content creation specialist. I create compelling content from website product photography to TikTok videos every day. Through this, I’ve been able to generate organic sales for multiple brands as well as grow their brand awareness and social media followings by thousands. I bring in millions of organic video views through all social media platforms via short form videos!

Maddi, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started out as a videographer, from a young age, I knew pretty early on that I had an interest in film. I studied film after high school but as social media marketing started to boom, I decided to teach myself everything I could about social media. I put it into practice for my personal accounts and then eventually started running brand accounts as well. I still use a lot of my film knowledge when it comes to creating advisement content and commercials.

Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
As a creative, I know this is a controversial subject. AI provides so many useful tools to aid in creating content. I feel as though it can be used to enhance the work of content creators and take some of the leg work out of bulk content creation. I use Chat GPT to write social media copy, help with idea generation, content calendar creation, etc. I don’t think it can DO all the work for you, but it certainly can help if you know how to use it correctly. It can be very hard to stay on top of all of the new tools that come out, but they are extremely useful once you know how to make it work.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I love to help others learn how to do what I do. People come to me to ask questions all the time and I love to see others succeed. I don’t like to gatekeep, I want to share my knowledge with other creatives. I can talk for hours about social media marketing strategies.
