We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Luz Alvarez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Luz below.
Luz , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
Hi! My name is Luz Alvarez owner of Leon’s Nail Art & Spa Located in Jacksonville Arkansas, and I’m originally from Chihuahua, Mexico. Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve always had a creative side. I loved drawing, sketching, and finding ways to express myself through art. As I grew older and became a mom, my priorities changed. I wanted to help support my family financially while still being present for my children and having the freedom to be there for them whenever they needed me—without having to depend on someone else’s schedule or decisions.
My journey into the nail industry started after visiting a nail salon here in Arkansas. I remember leaving disappointed with the results and telling my husband, “I think I can do this myself… how hard can it be?” At first, it was definitely harder than I expected, but I didn’t give up. As technology advanced and more educational resources became available, I dedicated myself to learning, practicing, and perfecting my craft. Over time, what started as curiosity became a true passion and talent.
I always kept my nails done, and everywhere I went, women would compliment them and ask where I got them done. Little by little, word of mouth began spreading, and before I knew it, my schedule was filling up quickly. By Christmas of 2021, I had become incredibly busy—even after just having my baby.
That was when my husband truly saw the potential in me and encouraged me to get licensed and take the leap toward opening my own beauty salon. It was one of the biggest and scariest decisions of my life, but I knew I wasn’t alone. I could never have made it this far without the love and support of my family.
My husband carried the financial responsibilities at home while I completed my school hours and focused on building our future. My mom helped care for my babies while I balanced school, a part-time job, and long work hours to continue growing my clientele and accommodating new clients. My dad and stepdad supported me financially when unexpected business expenses came up after I had already invested all my savings into making my dream a reality. My brothers- and sisters-in-law even helped paint the salon and put together furniture. Every single person played a part in helping me build something so special.
Most importantly, I know none of this would have been possible without God. He placed this dream in my heart before I could even fully understand it myself. During moments of doubt, exhaustion, and fear, He continued opening doors and guiding my path. Looking back now, I truly believe God gave me this vision, surrounded me with the right people, and made a way for everything to fall into place at exactly the right time.
Today, my salon is more than just a business to me—it represents faith, sacrifice, passion, growth, and the reminder that with hard work, support, and God by your side, anything is possible.
Luz , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I specialized in acrylic nails, what started as curiosity became a true passion and talent, leading me to specialize in advanced nail art and custom nail designs that allow me to express creativity through every set I create
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Everything happens for a reason—even the difficult moments. Growing up, my life was filled with challenges, but now I realize those experiences shaped me into the person I am today. Without those struggles, I wouldn’t have developed the strength, determination, and resilience that helped me pursue my dreams.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
One story that truly reflects my resilience was during the time I decided to pursue my license and open my own salon. At the time, I was balancing school hours, a part-time job, motherhood, and trying to grow my clientele all at once. There were days when I felt physically and emotionally exhausted, especially after just having my baby, but giving up was never an option for me.
I remember investing all of my savings into making my dream a reality, and then unexpected expenses started coming up one after another. There were moments of fear and uncertainty where I questioned whether I was making the right decision. But through every obstacle, my family continued supporting me, and my faith in God kept me going. Instead of letting those struggles stop me, I used them as motivation to work even harder.
Looking back now, I realize those difficult moments taught me resilience, patience, and perseverance. They reminded me that success doesn’t happen overnight, and that sometimes the hardest seasons of life are the ones that prepare you for the biggest blessings.
