Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kayla Opperman. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Kayla, thanks for joining us today. Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?
Yes, I’m happy to be a business owner! I would never return to a traditional office job working for others. I often think about what life would be like if I did still work a corporate job or if my husband still did. While it was less stressful to have a predictable, steady income and nice to have hours of the day we could be completely off the clock, I always come back to the same conclusion: life is far better as a business owner! The bigger the risk, the greater the reward, and I’m happy I took and continue to take risks. I not only appreciate the increased income for my family, but I also appreciate the unique days, legacy, flexibility, fun, and educational values business life brings us.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My business ownership has always been as a franchise owner, providing services to children and local to my community. While I love what I do, I felt like I needed to spice up my career! I started to explore the e-commerce world in last fall, which led me to starting BeneSip earlier this year. This was exactly what I needed, as it couldn’t differentiate more from my other businesses. BeneSip is a product, sold only online, serves adults, and I have full control of where I’d like it to go.
BeneSip is a tasty shot you take before going out for dinner and drinks. It prevents over-eating (drunk munchies) and hangovers. I found these two issues of mine to make it a struggle to stay productive and fit. In a world that trending towards sobriety, I thought it’d be fun to go a different route and see if we can solve these issues for people like me. BeneSip prevents us from having that second dinner or snacking too much while socializing over drinks. It also prevents us from making poor food choices the next day, performing poorly (or not at all) in fitness activities the next day, struggling to parent the next day, and feeling unmotivated to get work done the next day. Most of all, it’s wonderful to wake up feeling refreshed and without regrets! There are other products on the market that prevent hangovers, but BeneSip is the only one I know of that solves both problems.
While I understand the sober trend, and I absolutely respect it for those who choose that route, I’m happy there’s a way to still enjoy alcohol and meet our goals.

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
My interest in e-commerce started with a book I randomly picked up on vacation, 12 Months to $1 Million by Ryan Moran. I always read business-minded books, in hopes it’ll help me with the franchises I own. If I had known this was regarding e-commerce, I probably wouldn’t have read it. However, I found the title interesting and was immediately hooked. I promptly started following Ryan, which led me to his coaching business, Capitalism. I became a member of that soon after, and from there I was able to nail down my audience, product, and get things moving. I found it fascinating and absolutely believable that the audience matters more than the product, and you should always start with that. This is why I never started a business from the ground-up until now. I thought I needed a product idea first, and frankly, I didn’t have one. However, when you focus on a certain group of people, understand their lifestyle, needs, and problems, the product idea comes naturally. Joining Ryan’s group also meant joining a new community, which is another reason I never started a business from scratch until now. I always loved having my fellow franchisees around, and now I also have my fellow founders of various, incredible brands in this community. Entrepreneurship can be lonely, and this was a great move for me!

We’d love to hear your thoughts about selling platforms like Amazon/Etsy vs selling on your own site.
I sell on my site but mainly on Amazon. While it can feel unnerving to be at the mercy of Amazon, you can’t beat the instant access to all those customers, who are there to buy. People are loyal to Amazon, and it’s the go-to site for so many people. I feel it’s best for me to put most of my focus, marketing dollars, and energy into my Amazon listing.
