We recently connected with Joe Rabcow and have shared our conversation below.
Joe, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
The first time I realized I wanted to pursue a creative path professionally was a moment of pure revelation that hit me during an ordinary day at my mechanic shop. While I enjoyed working on cars and the satisfaction that came with it, I often found myself daydreaming about something else—something more fulfilling.
In my spare time, I would set off on photography adventures, exploring hidden corners of the city and capturing the beauty in everyday scenes that many people overlook. These outings were not just hobbies; they were essential for my mental health. Each shot was a chance to see the world through a different lens and find moments of beauty that might otherwise go unnoticed.
As I ventured into different artistic mediums, I discovered a deep passion for street art. It felt like a natural extension of my love for photography, blending vibrant expression with the raw, immediate feel of urban environments. The thrill of capturing spontaneous moments on the streets and experimenting with new techniques was invigorating.
My significant other’s unwavering support was crucial in this journey. Their belief in my artistic vision, even when I doubted myself, gave me the confidence to pursue my passion more seriously. Finding a community and an art family further fueled my drive. These connections provided invaluable feedback and a sense of belonging that was essential for my growth as an artist.
That pivotal moment when I decided to embrace art professionally was a turning point. It was when I fully committed to integrating my passion for photography and street art into my life, balancing it with my day job. It was a realization that my creative pursuits were not just a side interest but a vital part of who I am.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m Joe Rabcow, the owner of Unfocused Aperture Photography and Co-owner/Director of Photography at JAMM Gallery. My journey into photography began with a deep-seated love for capturing the essence of urban life. My work, both in color and black and white, uses both digital and film techniques to reveal the soul of the city. I’ve always been fascinated by the beauty that hides in plain sight, and my photography is all about highlighting those moments and stories that often go unnoticed.
At Unfocused Aperture Photography, I focus on street photography that tells poetic narratives of the urban landscape. Each photograph is a reflection of the city’s spirit, capturing everything from its bustling streets to its quiet corners. My work is not just about taking pictures but about creating visual stories that resonate with viewers on a deeper level.
In my role at JAMM Gallery, I help to oversee a dynamic space where artists from diverse backgrounds come together to collaborate and showcase their work. My goal is to foster a creative community that celebrates diversity and innovation, making art accessible and engaging for everyone. JAMM Gallery is a haven for creative exploration and expression, where we believe in the transformative power of art to connect and inspire.
What sets my work apart is my dedication to blending traditional analog techniques with contemporary digital practices, along with my passion for street art and urban environments. I also paint and create street art under the name @discarded.radioshack.project, bringing art into public spaces and making it a part of everyday life.
I’m most proud of the way my photography and street art have contributed to a broader appreciation of urban beauty and the collective spirit of our communities. Through my work, I aim to enrich our cultural landscape, one frame and one public piece at a time. If you’re interested in exploring the poetic side of city life, I invite you to follow my journey on Instagram: @unfocused_aperture_photography for my photography, and @discarded.radioshack.project for my street art.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being a creative lies in the sense of community and the presence of an art family. The journey of creating art is often deeply personal, but having a supportive network transforms it into something profoundly enriching.
At JAMM Gallery, we’ve built more than just a space for showcasing art; we’ve cultivated a vibrant community where artists from diverse backgrounds converge. This gallery is a haven where creativity thrives and where we support each other’s visions and growth. The collaborative environment we’ve fostered is incredibly fulfilling—it’s a place where ideas are shared freely, feedback is given constructively, and every artist feels valued.
Similarly, my experience with Unfocused Aperture Photography and my street art project under @discarded.radioshack.project has shown me the power of having a safe space to create. This environment allows me to experiment, take risks, and explore new ideas without the fear of judgment. Knowing that I have a community behind me—one that believes in my work and encourages my creative endeavors—makes all the difference.
The sense of belonging and mutual support within an art family helps me push boundaries and find new inspiration. It’s not just about creating art; it’s about sharing that art with others and feeling a connection through our collective experiences. This supportive network not only enriches my creative process but also makes the entire journey more rewarding and meaningful.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Yes, there is a clear goal driving my creative journey: I want to build a sustainable career in art that allows me and my wife to focus entirely on our passions without relying on day jobs. My dream is to support ourselves solely through my work in photography, street art, and our initiatives at JAMM Gallery.
I envision a future where we can fully immerse ourselves in our creative pursuits and contribute even more meaningfully to our community. At JAMM Gallery, we’ve cultivated a space where artists come together, collaborate, and thrive, and I’m deeply invested in continuing to nurture this vibrant environment. Being able to dedicate all our time to fostering this community and expanding our artistic reach would be incredibly fulfilling.
Achieving this goal means more than just financial stability; it’s about having the freedom to fully explore our creativity and make a lasting impact through our work. It’s about turning our passion into a way of life that enriches not just our own lives, but also the lives of those around us.
