We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Joe Feys. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Joe below.
Joe, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s been the best thing you’ve ever seen (or done yourself) to show a customer that you appreciate them?
I worked in corporate design for over a decade and it became clear to me early on that the relationships I made with clients quickly became my favorite part of the job. Since beginning my practice I’ve found that anything which shows my clients that there is a trusted relationship between a homeowner and designer is of great value. I keep close contact with my clients. I treat my clients to breakfast and treats, coffees, teas, fruit, etc. when I host a design presentation. I ask questions more than I talk about myself or my practice, and the ‘conclusion’ of every job involves a festive celebration of our work together, whether it be drinks out, small bites at my house, or a gift that offers personal items that reflect the time we’ve spent together.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
As the principal designer and founder of FD, I believe your home should be a sanctuary that tells your unique story. Based in Nashville, my journey into interior architecture was driven by a deep love for how spaces influence the soul. With over 2 decades of experience, I primarily focus my time on residential work, from ground-up builds to full-scale renovations. I tell my clients and friends that our goal is to become the bridge between architecture and interior Design.
Educated at Parsons in NYC and SCAD, both Savannah and ATL Campuses, I’ve had the chance to live and learn in some of the greatest cities on the East Coast, all very different in so many ways. Both of my degrees are in Architectural Design, so making the pivot towards interiors has given me the chance to better understand how design works as a whole. We are a ‘one stop shop’ in that we can help communicate your vision from concept to completion. Many firms struggle with the cohesion between the exterior and interior. We want to tell a complete story that addresses the entire scope of any project.
I know what sets Feys Design apart from other firms is that we lack ‘design ego’ that so many clients face when choosing a designer to work with. I have a personal design aesthetic and I know what i personally love; come inside my home and you will see this. But I do not do what I do to design for myself. I am simply here to take your vision and synthesize it through my lens of experience. I want to replace overwhelming choices with a cohesive, stress-free vision.
I do not take a client’s decision to hire Feys Design lightly. This is a choice which involves bringing a stranger into your most intimate spaces: where you sleep, eat, relax… There is trust that must be developed and a relationship that should be built that goes beyond choosing fabrics and wall colors. Your home is a place that communicates who you are and what you have to say.
I am committed and have built my brand on authenticity over trend. I treat every project with the integrity and passion required to turn a house into an elevated, soulful home that is effortlessly individual.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
My background in large-scale corporate and hospitality design taught me the technicalities of the craft, but it was the people who truly inspired me. I found my niche by building relationships so strong that clients would only work with me, project after project. This led me to follow my heart into residential design. There’s a deeper level of relaxation and joy I see in my clients now that I work with them inside of their own homes.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
It’s so simple. Transparency, loyalty, integrity and character. Never show someone or discuss something they can’t afford, avoid common sales tactics and listen.
