We were lucky to catch up with Jason Kinney recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jason , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Alright – so having the idea is one thing, but going from idea to execution is where countless people drop the ball. Can you talk to us about your journey from idea to execution?
The whole journey actually started because of a friend of mine who worked for Fuji. He used to let me play around with some of his gear, and honestly, I was hooked from the very first time I picked it up. What started as just experimenting with his equipment quickly turned into a passion that I ended up growing into an almost full time career. I spent about twenty years behind the lens, but the real shift into what we are doing now happened when I met my wife, Anoushka. Her own drive and her academic background really challenged me to take my craft to the next level. It was not enough to just be a guy with a camera anymore. I wanted to pair my technical experience with a solid business foundation, which is why I eventually went back to earn my MBA.
We decided to move away from just taking random jobs and instead focused on building something meaningful for the St. Louis community. The early days were not about a flashy launch, but more about the quiet work of getting the details right. I spent a lot of time figuring out how to make the process better for the people we serve. We reached out to local businesses we genuinely respected and offered to help them tell their stories. It was a way to connect with our neighbors while showing that our approach was about more than just a quick photo. We had to learn how to transition from being a hobbyist to being a real partner for our clients. It took a lot of work to move beyond that initial idea, but focusing on the people and the narrative is what turned a fun hobby with borrowed gear into a sustainable business.

Jason , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have been a photographer for over twenty years, but it all started when a friend at Fuji let me play with his gear. I was hooked instantly, and that curiosity eventually turned into a career. While I spent years honing the craft and earning a BFA in Digital Photography, the real shift happened when I met my wife, Anoushka. Her influence and my decision to earn an MBA pushed us to move beyond just taking photos and start SAJ Media Group as a professional resource for our community.
Today, we focus on portraits, sports, and branding. We stay away from the high volume wedding scene to focus on what we call narrative observation. This means capturing the honest, unposed moments that define a family legacy or a professional brand. What sets us apart is this mix of technical expertise and a business minded approach. We solve the problem of visual clutter by providing clean, timeless images that actually mean something long term.
I am most proud of the reputation we have built here in St. Louis for being reliable and intentional. I want people to know that when they work with us, they are getting a peer who values their time and their story. We are not interested in chasing trends. We are here to create work that stays relevant for a lifetime.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective thing I have done to grow the business was moving away from a passive approach and getting intentional about who we work with. Especially during slower seasons, I started reaching out directly to local St. Louis businesses that I personally admire. Instead of a hard sell, I offered a content for credit model or highly focused, reduced rate shoots to help them refresh their digital presence.
This worked for a few reasons. First, it allowed us to populate our portfolio with the exact kind of high-end, clean work we want to be known for. Second, it built immediate trust within the community. When you provide real value to a local business owner, they become your best advocates. It turned our marketing into a conversation rather than an advertisement.
Beyond that, we have grown by being very protective of the client experience. We focus on being easy to work with, delivering quickly, and keeping the process frictionless. For the high-net-worth families and corporate executives we serve, their time is their most valuable asset. By respecting that and providing a reliable, professional service, we have seen our clientele grow through word-of-mouth and repeat business. It is about building long-term authority rather than chasing short-term volume.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The mission behind everything we do is pretty simple. I want to get away from the disposable, “scroll-and-forget” photos we see everywhere. My goal is to create work that actually lasts. I want a family to look at a portrait twenty years from now and have it still carry weight.
The real shift happened for me when I saw how hard my wife, Anoushka, was working on her own path. It made me realize that I couldn’t just keep being a guy with a camera. I had to step it up. That is why I went for the MBA. I wanted to build a business that was as solid and professional as the photos I was taking.
At the end of the day, we just want to tell the real story. Whether I am shooting for a local business or a family, I am looking for those honest, unposed moments that actually mean something. We are not interested in the flashy trends or the high volume noise. We are just here to provide a professional experience and create a legacy for the people in our community.
