We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jason Booth a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jason, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I started taking pictures on a professional level in 2006. Before that it was purely for pleasure. My first professional job was a book of pictures of sunsets from the same spot on a Florida beach’, every day for a year. The book did well. My boss I was working for at my day job at a local corporate graphic design department found out I took great pictures and asked me to start taking pictures for the company. Several years later I found myself living in Austin and decided to go for photography full time. I had nothing to lose. Now I shoot freelance for the City of Dripping Springs and the Hays County Free Press, I do real estate VR tours and private portrait sessions and events all around Austin.

Jason, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I shoot freelance photography for the City of Dripping Springs and the Hays County Free Press newspaper, I do real estate VR tours, private portrait sessions and events all around Austin but specifically in Dripping Springs. I offer a range of services from photography to drone video, graphic design and engraving.
My photography service offers a unique vintage feel with crisp detail. You may have seen it all over the social media of Dripping Springs. Last year I photographed nearly every event in Dripping Springs including Founders Day, the Songwriters Festival and every rodeo, roller derby competition, Pup Splash, Winter Wonderland party and live music event you could think of. I will be doing the same this year as I help build them a photography library they will never get to the bottom of. I’ve delivered over 10,000 images for them to pull from for all current/future advertisements and social media posts.
Privately I offer portrait, wedding, headshots, mini sessions, real estate and events photography. I’m also an FAA licensed drone pilot for some added 4k footage. I’m also known to do charity events for free for local Dripping Springs 501c3s. I’ve worked with the Dripping Springs Cookoff Club, The Friendship Club, the Skateboard Club and many more. All private photography has the same look, feel and quality I deliver to the city and the newspapers for a great price with a discount for Dripping Springs residents.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I recently photographed the 2025 Dripping Springs Songwriter Festival. The DSSF is 3.5 days of live music stages, vendors and people all over the Dripping Springs wonderful downtown area. Sunrise to sunset I documented every moment of the entire festival and I delivered over 2000 edited photos on Monday night. Every singer, every stage and venue, the attendees and staff. I basically photographed from 9am to 8pm and edited from 9pm to 4am for 4 days straight! I’m 53 so my legs hurt for a few weeks and with 4 days of 20,000 steps each day I earned it.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I say all the time that my quiet place is in my viewfinder. When my eye is in there everything gets quiet and still and time slows down. My self doubt and anxiety just float away and I can hear myself think for once. There’s no bills, no drama, no politics and absolutely ZERO self consciousness. Taking out my camera and knowing I’m about to get into a groove for 12 hours at something like Dripping Springs Founders Day is so unbelievably relaxing and fulfilling. I think about how blessed I am to daily get to a place in my spirit that others never even find in a lifetime. Capturing tiny moments in time for people is the most rewarding endeavor I’ve ever embarked on and I hope to take a picture of everyone reading this right now. Find me with my camera and say hello sometime! I’m hard to miss, I’m big, bearded, bald, full of tattoos and have a large camera slung around my shoulder and we’re both probably standing somewhere in Dripping Springs. Just wait until I’m not lost in my viewfinder, I might not hear you.
