We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jamilah Conway a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jamilah, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How’s you first get into your field – what was your first job in this field?
Hey Everyone I’m Jamilah,
Upon graduating Bethune Cookman University in 2017, with a degree in Liberal Arts Concentration in Physical Education & Exercise Science while having a Minor in Athletic Training, I wanted to continue helping a lot of people create a healthier lifestyle for themselves. As a graduate, it was not easy finding a job in my field where it was male dominated. Growing up, I always went to camp and did not know that my favorite non profit was hiring wellness coaches. I began with my research to see how I can be a part of the company. Once I read the job description, the position was right for me. After hosting a lot of wellness classes at my university, I knew being a wellness coach would help me further my knowledge in health and wellness. I began as a coach one and then earned a position to be an advanced wellness coach at my branch. During my working hours, I would gather all information from each client to then create exercise programs for them once they came in for their appointment. I was a wellness coach to over 100 members. I also host group session programs for those who enjoy group exercise. After each session, I will document their achievement for that day. We also had weekly follow ups to recognize challenges that they may have faced during their wellness journey and how they can improve for themselves next week. Some clients took home the workouts we completed for the day just in case they would like to work out at home during their downtime. As the main wellness coach and certified fitness nutrition specialist in the wellness center during that time, I created a bulletin board with sections such as exercise tips, nutritional tips and a staff information section to get to know their wellness coaches. All of the members enjoy the bulletin board because it helped them with their wellness journey. There was also a quote of the day on the bulletin board for extra motivation while everyone exercises. I enjoy this job a lot because it taught me how to work with different age groups and diversities. It gave me that push I needed to continue being a great asset to my community. Anytime corporate came in to evaluate the wellness center, they were very pleased with my work. Upon leaving the company, a lot of members were very proud of my work and was appreciative of my services. Although many days were busier than others, I always maintain great hospitality, positive energy and cleanliness. I would recommend this job to anyone that’s a recent graduate and wants to expand their horizons before becoming a full time business owner.
Jamilah, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I got into the health and wellness industry when I was about 13 years old. I always went to the health club with my loved ones early in the morning to start our day. I also experience my first personal training session and enjoyed many exercise classes. While at the health clubs at 13, I enjoyed all cardio machines, weightlifting, and swimming. After a great workout session, I would go the steam sauna and dry sauna for recovery to reduce stiffness from muscle soreness while improving healthy skin. Even at a young age, I always made sure that my loved ones knew about healthy eating habits and ways to exercise to maintain a healthy lifestyle. I am proud that even after working with companies, I still maintain contact with my former clients. They would update me on their physical fitness results and achievements. After my experience as a young professional and going to college, I then apply what I learned there to help my colleagues create a healthy lifestyle for themselves. This led to me hosting many walking classes, group bootcamp classes, 101 training sessions and working with student athletes through the student athlete department. As a business owner, I provide nutrition services, fitness services, group fitness services, wellness services, as well as art therapy sessions, and gardening tips to grow your own food. Majority of my services are appointment based only.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
The most helpful knowledge, and or training to succeed in the health and wellness industry is to continue your education, whether it is collegiate or certification base. This will help aid to being very knowledgeable and using your creative skills to help those you are offering your service services too. Finding many books and creating a healthy lifestyle for yourself is always a plus. Without doing the work yourself how could you be able to teach someone else? Always maintain authenticity and mindfulness. Establishing your own brand and being consistent at all times will open doors for you in your field.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I built my reputation within my market around what I learned in college as well as my first coaching job position. This helped me understand my environment, the people in my environment and how to make it healthier. While maintaining a busy schedule, I always prioritize my clients as well as myself to be able to continue to teach how to have a healthier lifestyle. Having patience in this field will help build character in your reputation. This shows you’re able to maintain a good attitude at all time even when it’s hard to get your first client.
