We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Heather Cohen. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Heather below.
Heather, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you tell us the backstory behind how you came up with the idea?
The Mulberry Project is a boutique, full-service wallpaper showroom inspired by my love of pattern, texture, and pops of color that bring joy to everyday spaces. I curate a collection of unique, often hard-to-find wallpaper lines from artists around the world, so I can help my clients create something truly personal and special.
The idea didn’t happen overnight, it’s been evolving since 2008, when I moved onto Mulberry Street with my husband and our children. From the moment we walked into our home, it felt like magic. Our neighborhood is full of creative energy – we all have these charming 1950s ranch homes, and we are always in the middle of a project; refreshing a room, hosting gatherings, making our homes feel more “us.” Wallpaper quickly became a favorite design element. It has the power to completely transform a space, to make it feel layered, intentional, and full of personality. I saw firsthand how it could turn everyday rooms into spaces where people truly loved to spend time.
This experience planted a seed. Over the years, my passion for wallpaper only grew stronger. I found myself constantly sourcing new lines, helping friends and clients select patterns, and guiding them through design decisions. What started organically became something people began to rely on me for.
I realized there was a gap in the market, especially locally, for a highly curated, full-service wallpaper resource. Something that felt elevated yet approachable. A place where both homeowners and designers could come not just for product, but for guidance, expertise, and a seamless experience from selection through installation.
I knew this was a worthwhile endeavor because I had already seen the impact. I had watched how thoughtful design, especially wallpaper, could change how people feel in their homes. And I knew I could succeed because this wasn’t just an idea, it was something I had been living, refining, and naturally building for years. My eye for design, combined with my love of working with people to create beautiful, meaningful spaces, gave me the confidence to turn that passion into a business.
The Mulberry Project is really an extension of that original feeling on Mulberry Street—creating spaces that are personal, joyful, and meant to be lived in and shared.

Heather, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m the founder of The Mulberry Project, a boutique wallpaper showroom and full-service resource for homeowners, businesses and design professionals. My background is in sales as well as independent interior styling and design consulting for friends and private, referral-based clients. I’ve always had a passion for interiors and creating beautiful, meaningful spaces. What started as helping friends with design decisions—especially wallpaper—naturally evolved into a business.
At The Mulberry Project, I curate a collection of unique, often hard-to-find wallpaper lines from artists around the world, and provide a seamless, start-to-finish experience—from selection and sourcing to ordering and installation. I work closely with clients to simplify what can feel like an overwhelming process and help them make confident, elevated design decisions.
One of the biggest problems I solve is taking the guesswork out of wallpaper. There are so many options, materials, and technical considerations, and I guide clients through all of it so the end result feels intentional, cohesive, and beautifully executed.
What sets me apart is the combination of a highly curated point of view and a very hands-on, personalized approach. I’m not just selling wallpaper—I’m helping bring a vision to life in a way that feels effortless for my clients.
I’m most proud of building something that blends creativity with service, and of the relationships I’ve built along the way. I want potential clients to know that when they work with me, they’re getting someone who is genuinely invested in their space and committed to creating something that feels special, personal, and lasting.

Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
Yes—what started as a side passion naturally evolved into my full-time business.
I owned my own business years ago, but after a divorce, as a single mom, I decided to transition into corporate sales in order to ensure I had a stable income and benefits to support my daughter. Corporate sales was never my passion, it was just a necessary step in my life. I have always loved interiors and had a strong eye for design, and I knew one day I would leave the corporate world and pursue my passion. For years, I found myself helping friends, family, and eventually private clients with design for their homes, especially when it came to wallpaper. I was constantly sourcing unique lines, giving input on selections, and guiding projects simply because I loved it.
Over time, it became clear that this wasn’t just a hobby as people were consistently coming to me for help, and there was a real need for a more curated, full-service wallpaper resource. I saw an opportunity to create something that didn’t really exist locally; a place where clients could access beautiful, hard-to-find wallpaper and also feel fully supported through the entire process.
As demand grew, the transition felt very natural. I leaned into what was already happening organically, and The Mulberry Project became my full-time focus; combining my love of design with my background in building relationships and delivering a high-touch client experience.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being a creative in the interior design space is getting to bring something to life that truly means something to someone else. What starts as an idea or a feeling becomes a space that people live in, gather in, and make memories in, and that’s incredibly special.
For me, there’s nothing better than seeing a client’s reaction when everything comes together. When a space finally feels like them-comfortable, personal, and beautiful in a way that makes them happy to walk through the door every day. Those moments never get old.
It’s also deeply fulfilling to build something that feels like an extension of who I am. My work is rooted in connection, creativity, and helping people create spaces they love; and being able to do that every day is something I feel so grateful for.
