We were lucky to catch up with Becky Raybon recently and have shared our conversation below.
Becky , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I started by refinishing a few pieces of my own furniture. I learned about staining furniture, then went on to hand painting furniture. At the same time I was learning social media, where to buy furniture to restore, and watching YouTube videos Learning what tools I needed and how to achieve certain techniques took patience, money, and making mistakes. Luckily I am not afraid to try, and try again!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I started in 2017. I had always been a creative but needed a new outlet and had time on my hands. My kids were in college, my job had been program management for over 15 years and changed to something less creative. I had initially started as an Interior Design major in College and needed a hobby that focused on helping people create unique spaces . I think many of my clients have great ideas but they don’t have the know how, tools or time to upcycle or restore their furniture. I have been fortunate to have so many repeat customers. This is still a hobby and I don’t get to spend as much time as I would like but I have close to 4000 followers on Facebook and that is pretty good gor a girl in her garage!

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Taking an idea and putting it into action by making something look different or giving it a new purpose.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Not everyone is going to cheer you on. I noticed this early on when joining social media groups. If you are buying furniture to resell and posts the finished product, learn to distinguish between what is helpful feedback and what is not helpful in your growth as an artist.
