We were lucky to catch up with Dr. Starr Barrett recently and have shared our conversation below.
Dr. Starr, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
One meaningful risk I took was expanding GodXess into vegan hair products while also transitioning many of our holistic services into a mobile model to reduce overhead.
When I first started GodXess, the focus was primarily on holistic wellness services—things like Reiki, spiritual counseling, and other energy-based healing services. Through working closely with clients, I began noticing a pattern. Many people were asking questions about their hair health and the ingredients in the products they were using. They were becoming more conscious about what they put on their bodies and wanted products that aligned with a holistic lifestyle.
At the same time, like many small business owners, I was thinking about sustainability and the cost of maintaining a physical location. Around that time, a friend of mine named Tye suggested something that really made me think—she recommended that I consider offering mobile services. Her idea was that bringing the services directly to clients could reduce overhead while also making the business more accessible.
That conversation sparked a shift in how I looked at the business.
First, I decided to move forward with developing a line of vegan hair products for GodXess. I worked collaboratively with a professional lab to develop the formulas so the products would align with the brand’s philosophy—vegan, clean ingredients, and supportive of healthy hair care. Entering the product space was definitely a risk because it required investing resources into development, packaging, and marketing without knowing exactly how the market would respond.
At the same time, I began implementing the mobile services model that Tye had suggested. This allowed us to bring holistic services directly to clients through private appointments and events, while also reducing the overhead that comes with maintaining a traditional brick-and-mortar space.
In the end, that risk turned into a powerful opportunity. The vegan hair products have helped expand the GodXess brand beyond services, allowing us to vend at events, collaborate with retailers, and reach customers outside of our immediate area. Meanwhile, offering mobile services has made the business more flexible and scalable.
What I learned from that experience is that sometimes growth comes from being open to new ideas, trusting your vision, and being willing to pivot when it makes sense. By listening, collaborating, and taking a calculated risk, we were able to evolve GodXess into a more dynamic wellness and beauty brand.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Dr. Starr B., and I am the co-founder of GodXess alongside my daughter, Essynce Moore. GodXess is a holistic wellness and beauty brand rooted in the belief that true beauty and wellbeing begin from within.
My journey into this work grew from a deep passion for healing, empowerment, and helping people reconnect with themselves. Over the years, I developed experience in holistic modalities such as Reiki, spiritual counseling, and other energy-based practices. Through working with clients, I began to see a consistent pattern—many people were seeking balance not only spiritually and emotionally, but physically as well. They were looking for ways to care for their bodies, their hair, and their overall wellbeing in a more intentional and holistic way.
That realization helped shape the vision for GodXess.
Together, my daughter Essynce and I wanted to build a brand that merged wellness, beauty, and empowerment. Through GodXess, we offer a range of holistic services designed to help people restore balance and prioritize self-care. These services include Reiki healing sessions, ionic foot detox, spiritual counseling, chromotherapy, aura and energy readings, and yoni steams. Our goal is to help clients release stress, gain clarity, and reconnect with their personal power.
In addition to wellness services, GodXess also offers a line of vegan hair care products created in collaboration with a professional lab. We worked closely with the lab to develop products that reflect our philosophy—clean, vegan ingredients that support healthy hair and align with a more conscious approach to beauty. Our product line includes items such as hair oil, edge control, hair foam, gel, and other styling and treatment products designed to nourish hair while avoiding unnecessary or harsh ingredients.
One of the main problems we aim to solve for our clients is the disconnect that often exists between beauty and wellness. Many people are using products that may improve appearance but do not necessarily support overall health. At GodXess, we focus on a more holistic approach—encouraging people to care for their hair, their energy, and their wellbeing in ways that are aligned and supportive.
What sets GodXess apart is that it is not just a product line or a wellness service—it is an experience and a philosophy. Everything we do centers around self-care, empowerment, and helping people reconnect with themselves. When someone engages with GodXess, they are not just purchasing a product or booking a service; they are stepping into a space that encourages them to prioritize their wellbeing.
One of the things I am most proud of is building this brand alongside my daughter. Essynce is a creative entrepreneur in her own right, and bringing our ideas together has allowed us to create something that blends wellness, creativity, and purpose. Seeing the brand grow and watching clients leave our services feeling lighter, more confident, and more empowered is incredibly rewarding.
What I want potential clients, followers, and supporters to know is that GodXess was created with intention. Every product and service reflects our belief that self-care is not a luxury—it is essential. Our mission is to help people feel supported in their wellness journeys and to remind them that when they take care of themselves holistically, that energy radiates into every area of their lives.
Ultimately, GodXess is about helping people step into their most balanced, confident, and empowered selves.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One lesson I had to unlearn as an entrepreneur was the belief that the people you expect to support you the most will always be the ones who show up for you.
When I first started building my businesses, including GodXess, I naturally thought that many of the people around me—friends, acquaintances, and even people who expressed excitement about what I was doing—would become some of my biggest supporters. I expected that they would promote the brand, purchase products, or show up to events simply because they knew me.
What I learned over time is that entrepreneurship doesn’t always work that way. Often, the strongest support comes from people who discover your brand organically or who genuinely connect with your mission and what you offer—not necessarily from those who are closest to you.
At first, that realization was difficult. It can feel discouraging when the people you thought would champion your vision are not as involved as you expected. But over time, I had to unlearn that expectation and shift my mindset.
Instead of focusing on who wasn’t showing up, I learned to stay focused on the bigger picture and the people who were supporting the vision. I also learned the importance of making mental notes—observing how people move, understanding who truly aligns with the brand, and adjusting how I invest my time and energy.
That lesson ultimately made me a stronger and more focused entrepreneur. It taught me to keep moving forward regardless of external validation and to build a business based on purpose and resilience. When you stay committed to your vision and continue showing up, the right supporters, clients, and opportunities will find their way to you.
Today, I approach my work with a clearer perspective: stay focused, keep going, and let your consistency speak for itself.

We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
My co-founder is actually my daughter, Essynce Moore—so our story started long before the business did. I often joke that I didn’t meet my co-founder… I birthed her.
Essynce has always been a force to be reckoned with. From a very young age, she showed incredible creativity, confidence, and entrepreneurial spirit. Watching her grow and develop her own voice and vision has been one of the most inspiring experiences of my life. Over the years, I saw firsthand that she had the drive, talent, and determination to build something meaningful.
When the opportunity came to build GodXess, it felt natural for us to do it together. Our partnership works because we bring different strengths to the table while sharing the same core values around empowerment, creativity, and purpose. I bring my background in holistic wellness and healing, while Essynce brings her creativity, cultural awareness, and entrepreneurial mindset.
Beyond being business partners, what makes our collaboration special is trust. As a mother, I already know her character, her work ethic, and her heart. I know I can trust her with my every being, and that level of trust is incredibly powerful when building something together.
Working with Essynce allows us to create a brand that bridges generations. We’re able to connect with people from different backgrounds and age groups while staying rooted in our shared vision of wellness, beauty, and empowerment.
At the end of the day, building GodXess together isn’t just about business—it’s about legacy. We are creating something meaningful that reflects both of our passions while showing what’s possible when family, purpose, and entrepreneurship come together.
