Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dr. Karmashia McDuffie. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Dr. Karmashia McDuffie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
The journey from idea to execution for Dr. Sharona Johnson and Dr. Karmashia “Kay” McDuffie began long before either of them formally launched a business. It started in a rural town in Benton, Louisiana, where they grew up watching their parents work tirelessly in jobs that required long hours, offered limited pay, and provided little opportunity for advancement due to limited access to education. Witnessing that reality planted an early seed. From a young age, they shared a mutual understanding that while they deeply respected their parents’ sacrifices, they did not want to inherit the same financial limitations or constrained view of what life could offer.
The idea phase was not a single moment but a gradual realization shaped by conversations, encouragement, and shared determination. As sisters, they consistently motivated one another to think beyond traditional paths and to view education, faith, and ownership as tools for transformation. The turning point came when they recognized that entrepreneurship would allow them not only to create financial stability but also to serve others through purpose-driven work. That realization led to the next step: action.
In the early days following that decision, their focus shifted to learning. They spent time researching industries, studying business models, and most importantly observing successful leaders. One of the most critical steps in moving beyond the idea phase was intentionally positioning themselves near accomplished CEOs and business owners. Through shadowing these leaders, they gained firsthand insight into operations, decision-making, risk management, and long-term strategy. This mentorship period, which unfolded over months and years, became the foundation of their execution phase.
As their vision became clearer, implementation followed. Together, they worked through the practical realities of launching businesses: defining services, establishing credibility, setting up operations, and learning how to structure sustainable organizations. During this time, both sisters also became published authors, writing books centered on hope, faith, resilience, and the power of accomplished dreams. Authorship was not only a business decision but an extension of their mission to uplift others who came from similar backgrounds.
Dr. Sharona Johnson ultimately launched Johnson Healthcare Solutions, applying her expertise and leadership to improve systems and outcomes within healthcare. Dr. Kay McDuffie founded KGM Consulting, focused on guidance, strategy, and empowerment through professional development and faith-centered leadership. While each company serves a distinct purpose, both were built on the same principles: education, mentorship, discipline, and service.
Looking back, the process from idea to launch was not instantaneous. It required intentional learning, strategic relationships, patience, and unwavering belief. What began as a shared childhood observation in a small rural town evolved into two thriving businesses rooted in purpose. Their story reflects the reality that entrepreneurship is not just about having an idea—it is about doing the work, seeking guidance, and committing to growth long after the idea is born.

Dr. Karmashia McDuffie, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
For readers who may be learning about us for the first time, we are **Dr. Sharona Johnson** and **Dr. Karmashia “Kay” McDuffie**, sisters, scholars, authors, and entrepreneurs whose work is rooted in purpose, service, and transformation. We were raised in a rural community in Benton, Louisiana, where opportunity was limited and expectations were often set by circumstance rather than potential. Those early experiences shaped our determination to pursue education, leadership, and ownership as tools to change not only our lives, but the lives of others.
Our entry into our respective industries was driven by both lived experience and intentional preparation. Dr. Sharona Johnson entered the healthcare industry after recognizing critical gaps in leadership, systems, and patient-centered solutions. Her work led to the creation of Johnson Healthcare Solutions, where she provides strategic guidance, operational support, and leadership development to healthcare organizations seeking sustainable improvement. Her services focus on solving complex organizational challenges, strengthening systems, and helping healthcare leaders operate with clarity, efficiency, and integrity.
Dr. Kay McDuffie’s journey led her into consulting, authorship, and faith-based leadership development. Through KGM Consulting, she offers professional development, coaching, strategic planning, and purpose-driven consulting services designed to help individuals and organizations grow with intention. Her work addresses challenges related to mindset, leadership confidence, direction, and alignment between purpose and execution. In addition to consulting, both of us are published authors whose books focus on hope, faith, resilience, and the power of accomplished dreams.
What sets us apart is not only what we do, but how we do it. Our work is grounded in lived experience, education, and a deep understanding of what it means to start with limited resources and still build something impactful. We understand that success often requires a renewed mindset before it requires a new strategy. One of our core beliefs is that sometimes you must change your environment in order to change your future. That belief has guided our personal decisions, professional growth, and the way we support our clients.
We are most proud of the transformation behind our success. Our achievements are the result of intentional mindset shifts, disciplined learning, faith, and the courage to step beyond familiar surroundings. We are proud that we built our businesses with integrity, collaboration, and a commitment to service, and that we continue to uplift others who may not yet see what is possible for themselves.
The main thing we want potential clients, followers, and readers to know is that our brands represent more than services or products. They represent possibility, preparation, and purpose. Our work is for those who are ready to grow, ready to think differently, and ready to invest in a future that is not limited by where they started. We are living proof that with vision, mentorship, and perseverance, it is possible to redefine what success looks like and to build a legacy that reaches far beyond oneself.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One of the most critical lessons we had to unlearn was the belief that our dreams needed to fit within the limits of our environment. For a long time, we did not realize how deeply our early surroundings shaped the way we viewed success, possibility, and even ourselves. We were raised in a culture where life followed a very basic and predictable pattern: you worked one job, you came home, you took care of your family, and you repeated that cycle year after year. While there is dignity in hard work, there were no conversations about dreaming beyond survival.
The backstory to this lesson is rooted in the absence of exposure. We were not taught about five-year plans, financial literacy, resilience, or how to navigate mental health challenges. Our father struggled with severe mental health issues and had little to no formal education, which further limited the guidance available in our household. As a result, we grew up believing that stability was the highest attainable goal, rather than growth or expansion.
Unlearning this mindset required intentional effort. We had to actively teach ourselves to believe in our own abilities and to dream beyond what we could immediately see or imagine. We learned that while our teachers were our first educators, the lessons of life did not end in the classroom. Education extended into lived experiences, mentorship, self-reflection, and faith.
Ultimately, we learned that our upbringing did not have to define our future. By challenging inherited beliefs and expanding our perspective, we were able to replace limitation with vision. That process of unlearning became one of the most transformative steps in our personal growth and entrepreneurial journeys, allowing us to pursue paths that once felt unimaginable.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
One defining story from our journey that illustrates our resilience came during a season when we realized that not everyone around us would be able to support our vision. This was a difficult lesson to learn because the lack of support was not rooted in ill intent, but in limited capacity. Many of the individuals we were surrounded by simply could not dream at the level we envisioned, and that realization required both emotional maturity and strength.
During this time, we knew we wanted more, desired more, and were willing to strive for more, even when that choice set us apart. We both worked three to four jobs simultaneously in order to save money, invest in ourselves, and fund our goals. Those seasons were physically exhausting and emotionally demanding, yet we refused to allow fatigue or discouragement to derail our purpose.
We faced repeated obstacles, including being told no, being questioned about our ambition, and hearing that we were “doing too much.” Instead of allowing those voices to slow us down, we chose to continue moving forward. We leaned into mutual encouragement and accountability, reminding each other of the vision we were working toward and the reasons we started.
Our resilience was built in those moments of pressure. We did not stop when things became difficult or uncomfortable. We kept going because we believed in ourselves, in our calling, and in what was possible beyond our current circumstances. That unwavering commitment to persistence, even in isolation, became a defining strength in both our personal lives and our entrepreneurial journeys.
