We were lucky to catch up with Donisha D. Law recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Donisha D. thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I started my business during one of the most uncertain times in the world, COVID-19. At the time, I was working my regular job, just going through my normal routine. One day, while listening to music on YouTube at work, an ad came on about becoming a loan signing agent and making money as a notary. Something about it caught my attention. I had never really considered it before, but I was curious.
I immediately started researching. I learned that in Minnesota, you need to complete an 8-hour course to handle real estate transactions. Without overthinking it, I signed up. I had already become a notary in 2019, but this felt like the next level. By January 2020, I had completed my training and applied for my closing license but truthfully, I was still nervous. I wasn’t sure if I was really ready to step into something new.
Then life forced my hand.
In March 2020, on my birthday of all days, I was laid off due to COVI9 with no clear return date. I remember the mix of emotions: fear, uncertainty, but also a small voice inside me saying, “This is your moment.” That same week, I went to the store and started buying supplies to set up a small office. I made the decision to take this seriously.
Not long after, I got my first call for an assignment. I remember being so nervous especially about quoting my fee. I was afraid they would say no. But I pushed through that fear and accepted the job. It was an out-of-state purchase closing in St. Paul. I showed up, did the signing, and completed it with no errors. That moment changed everything for me. That was the moment my confidence was built.
From there, I kept going. I learned different types of closings—seller packages, purchase transactions, HELOCs, loan modifications—and I was also exposed to trust documents and power of attorney forms. But what really stood out to me wasn’t just the work—it was the people.
During COVID, I was walking into homes, meeting people from all different backgrounds, and seeing firsthand how people were living, struggling, adapting. It opened my eyes. I realized this business wasn’t just about documents—it was about service, accessibility, and meeting people where they are.
That’s when my business truly evolved.
I became a mobile notary, intentionally offering services where people needed them most—homes, hospitals, nursing facilities—anywhere that was convenient and comfortable for the client. I recognized a gap: many people, especially seniors or those who are homebound, didn’t have easy access to notary services. I wasn’t just filling a need—I was bringing the service directly to them.
As my confidence grew, so did my vision. I expanded into general notary work, inspections, and quality control for companies. Then I moved into estate planning support and apostille services, understanding how critical it is for families to have properly executed documents during important life moments.
What excited me most was the freedom and control I gained—not just financially, but over my time, my impact, and my growth. I was no longer limited. I was building something that allowed me to serve people in a real way while also creating stability for myself and my family.
The logic behind why I knew this would work was simple: people will always need documents notarized—but not everyone has access, flexibility, or guidance. I wasn’t just offering a service; I was offering convenience, reliability, and a personal touch.
This business became more than just a way to make money—it became a way for me to step fully into my purpose. It allowed me to turn a moment of uncertainty into an opportunity, and ultimately, into a thriving business that continues to grow and evolve today.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
My name is Donisha D. Law, and I am the owner of DLaw Notary & Consulting Services LLC, a Minnesota-based mobile notary business that I proudly named after myself. “DLaw” isn’t just a brand—it represents my name, my reputation, and the level of professionalism and integrity I bring to every client interaction.
Today, I provide a wide range of professional notary and support services throughout the Twin Cities and surrounding areas. My services include:
• General notary work (affidavits, power of attorney, medical directives, contracts)
• Real estate loan signings (purchases, refinances, HELOCs, seller packages, loan modifications)
• Estate planning document notarizations
• Apostille services for international document authentication
• I-9 employment verification services for businesses
• Mobile and on-site notarizations (homes, hospitals, nursing facilities, offices)
• Quality control and inspection services for companies
What truly sets my business apart is convenience and care. I don’t just wait for clients to come to me—I go to them. I serve individuals who are busy, homebound, in hospitals, or in transitional life moments where accessibility matters most. I’ve built my business around meeting people where they are, both physically and emotionally.
One of the biggest problems I solve is access. Many people don’t realize how difficult it can be to find a reliable notary when you actually need one—especially outside of traditional business hours or in urgent situations. I provide flexible scheduling, professionalism, and a calm, knowledgeable presence during what are often very important life decisions.
Another thing that sets me apart is my real-life experience. I’ve worked with people from all walks of life—families, seniors, professionals, and individuals navigating difficult situations. My background in support services and coaching has shaped how I show up. I’m not just there to stamp a document or ” just a notary”—I’m there to guide the process, ensure accuracy, and create a comfortable experience for my clients.
What I’m most proud of is the resilience behind my journey. As a single mother of five, I’ve built this business from the ground up during one of the hardest times in recent history. I turned a layoff into an opportunity and created something that not only supports my family but also serves my community in a meaningful way.
I’m also proud of how much I’ve grown the business. What started as loan signings has expanded into multiple service areas, including estate planning support, apostille services, and business-to-business partnerships. I continue to evolve, learn, and expand because I believe in providing value at every level.
If there’s one thing I want people to know about me and my brand, it’s this: I stand on professionalism, reliability, and genuine care. When you work with DLaw Notary, you’re not just getting a service—you’re getting someone who takes pride in doing things right, who respects your time, and who understands the importance of the documents you’re signing.
DLaw is more than a business—it’s a reflection of who I am: resilient, detail-oriented, service-driven, and committed to excellence.

If you have multiple revenue streams in your business, would you mind opening up about what those streams are and how they fit together?
Yes—my business is intentionally structured with multiple and supplementary revenue streams, which allows me to stay profitable, flexible, and not dependent on just one source of income.
At the core, DLaw Notary & Consulting Services LLC generates income through several service-based streams:
Primary Revenue Streams
• Loan Signing Services – Real estate transactions such as purchases, refinances, HELOCs, seller packages, and loan modifications
• General Notary Services – Power of attorney, affidavits, medical directives, contracts, and more
• Mobile Notary Services – Travel-based services for homes, hospitals, nursing facilities, and businesses (travel fees included)
Expanded / Supplementary Revenue Streams
• Estate Planning Notarizations – Working with clients and attorneys to notarize wills, trusts, and estate documents
• Apostille Services – Assisting clients with document authentication for international use (premium-priced service)
• I-9 Employment Verification – Partnering with companies to verify remote employees
• Quality Control & Inspections – Working with companies to complete verification and inspection assignments
• After-Hours / Rush Services – Premium fees for evenings, weekends, and urgent requests

What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
Yes—what started as a side hustle during one of the most uncertain times in my life has grown into a primary business and long-term career.
I originally got into the notary industry in 2019, but at that time, it was more of an idea than a fully committed path. Everything changed in 2020 during COVID. After being laid off from my job—with no clear return date—I was forced to think differently about income, stability, and control over my future.
That’s when I decided to go all in.
From 2020 to 2022, I operated as a full-time entrepreneur, building my notary business from the ground up. During that time, I gained hands-on experience in loan signings, general notary work, and mobile services. I built confidence, expanded my knowledge, and began establishing relationships with signing services and clients. This period was critical—it was where I laid the foundation and proved to myself that this business model worked.
As life shifted, so did my approach.
From 2022 to 2024, I transitioned back into full-time employment at an adult day program, while continuing to run my business part-time. Even though I wasn’t operating full-time in my business during this period, I stayed consistent. I continued taking assignments, serving clients, and expanding my services. This phase taught me balance, discipline, and how to maintain and grow a business alongside a full-time career.
Now, from 2025 to present, I’ve stepped into a new level of alignment. I currently work part-time in healthcare as a caregiver, which gives me the flexibility to run my business almost full-time again. This balance allows me to continue serving my community while also fully investing in the growth of my business.
