We were lucky to catch up with Dimitris Terpizis recently and have shared our conversation below.
Dimitris , appreciate you joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I think the first time I truly realized I wanted to pursue a creative path wasn’t a single moment, but a growing awareness that music was how I understood and connected with the world. My parents tell me that at four years old I was already playing drums with kitchen utensils, turning everything around me into an instrument. What started as play quickly became something deeper, a way to express emotion before I even had the words for it.
The real turning point came during my time at the Paphos Music High School, especially in 2017 when Paphos and Aarhus were European Capitals of Culture. Performing internationally, collaborating with musicians from different cultures, and standing on stage in those environments made me realize how powerful music could be in bringing people together. I remember feeling that this was more than something I loved doing, it was something I needed to dedicate my life to.
From that point on, pursuing music professionally felt natural. I wanted to create experiences that move people emotionally and take listeners on a journey, which is still the core of my work today as a performer and composer.

Dimitris , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a drummer, composer, and educator from Paphos, Cyprus, currently based in Boston, whose work centers around emotion, storytelling, and connection through music. My artistic goal is to create immersive sonic experiences that transport listeners, music that feels like a journey rather than just a performance.
I began my musical path at a very young age, first experimenting with rhythm as a child and later studying drums, piano, and guitar formally. What drew me deeper into music was its ability to communicate beyond language. Through my studies in Cyprus, at the Conservatory of Maastricht in the Netherlands, and later at the Berklee Global Jazz Institute in Boston, I became increasingly interested not only in performance but also in composition and artistic identity, exploring how sound can express complex human emotions and shared experiences.
Today, my work spans several areas. As a performer and bandleader, I present original music through my projects, including my debut album Amorphous Odyssey, which features Panagiotis Andreou and David Binney, as well as my recent EP 6211. I’ve performed and recorded with artists such as Camille Bertault, Lander Gyselinck, Yasmin Levy, Chase Morrin, and have collaborated with ensembles including the Aarhus Jazz Orchestra, Orchestravian, the Fringe Orchestra, and the Swing Design Big Band, performing across Europe, the United States and Central America. Alongside my own projects, I contribute to recordings, live performances, and interdisciplinary works while also sharing my approach to rhythm, creativity, and musical expression through teaching.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Every moment I play the drums feels like the best feeling in the world. During that time, everything else disappears, I’m completely focused on creating something meaningful, making people move, and sharing what I want to express with the world.
Music allows us to connect with others even when we don’t speak the same verbal language. It’s probably the most powerful tool we have for expression and communication. Through sound, emotion can travel directly from one person to another without explanation.
What makes this experience even more powerful is when people truly relate to and enjoy the music we create. Seeing audiences connect, feel something, or lose themselves in the music gives a deep sense of purpose. In those moments, it feels like the most important thing in the world, a shared experience where everyone becomes part of the same story.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Music is not just something I do, but something I’m meant to do. Music heals me on a daily basis, and over time I’ve come to see it as my calling. In difficult moments, music supported and guided me in ways nothing else could, and that experience shaped my desire to share its healing and transformative power with others.
Through music, I’ve been able to explore the world, connect with different cultures, and grow both creatively and personally. Because of that, I feel a responsibility to create and perform as much as possible. A big part of my current artistic direction is merging cultures within a contemporary jazz framework and reconnecting with my own cultural identity, something music ultimately helped me embrace.
I see my work as an ongoing journey, and I hope listeners can follow along as these ideas continue to evolve through my upcoming projects.
