Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Demi Cavender. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Demi, appreciate you joining us today. Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
Yes. I’m happier. But that doesn’t mean I’ve never fantasized about clocking in somewhere at 9am, doing my job, and mentally leaving it there at 5.
I think the last time I really had that thought was during peak fall season. You know the kind of week where the calendar looks beautiful and full but you’re also editing at 11:47pm with one eye barely open, Lightroom lagging, and your brain running through tomorrow’s to-do list. I had just wrapped up back-to-back family sessions. The boys were already asleep. My kitchen still had dishes in the sink. My phone had emails I hadn’t answered. And I was sitting at my computer thinking, “A regular job would be so much simpler.”
There’s something appealing about knowing exactly what your paycheck will be. Not having to market yourself. Not wondering if inquiries will slow down. Not calculating quarterly taxes in your head while brushing your teeth. Just show up. Do the work. Leave.
As a business owner, you carry everything. The creative. The customer service. The finances. The problem solving. The “what if next month is slow?” thoughts. And when you’re also a mom, that weight can feel heavy.
But what usually pulls me back….The next morning, I’ll walk into a session and watch a mom tear up seeing herself in a way she hasn’t in years. I’ll get an email saying, “These are my favorite photos we’ve ever had.” I’ll see my kids wearing shirts with my business name on them, proud of what I built. And I remember I didn’t just want a job. I wanted freedom and creativity. I wanted to build something my boys could watch grow.
A regular job might feel easier on the hard days. It might mean shutting the laptop at 5 and not thinking about SEO or client galleries or editing queues. But it would also mean asking for time off to attend a school event. Missing golden-hour magic because I’m on someone else’s schedule. Not being able to pivot or dream big whenever I want.
But happier? Yes. Unequivocally yes. I’m living my dream everyday.
Because this business isn’t just work. It’s something I built from photographing my own babies in good light. It’s grown alongside my children. It’s allowed me to be present in ways a traditional job might not. And even on the chaotic, exhausting days it still feels like mine.
And that ownership changes everything.

Demi, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi, I’m Demi, the photographer behind Demi Adena Photography in Manhattan, Kansas. I specialize in light, bright, candid photography for families, couples, seniors, maternity, and weddings.
I started photography as a mom just wanting better photos of my own kids, and it quickly grew into something so much bigger. I realized I love helping people see themselves in a beautiful, confident way. What began as a creative outlet became a business built on connection.
I provide a full service experience, including styling help and natural posing guidance, because I know most people don’t feel “photogenic.” One of the biggest problems I solve is helping clients relax and actually enjoy their session so their photos feel real not stiff or forced.
What sets me apart is how much I care about the experience. I’m there hyping you up, calming nerves, and making sure you feel confident the entire time. I’m most proud that my business has grown through referrals and community support that means everything to me.
If you work with me, just come as you are. I’ll take care of the rest.

How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
I didn’t start with investors or a big savings account I started with a yard sale camera.
My very first camera was a Nikon D3500 that I bought cheap from a yard sale. It wasn’t fancy, but it was mine, and I was determined to make it work. I offered low-cost sessions at the beginning partly to build my portfolio, partly to build confidence, and partly to save for better equipment.
Every session funded the next upgrade. A new lens. Then a better camera body. Then editing software. Then education. I reinvested almost everything back into the business. I didn’t wait until everything was “perfect” I built as I went.
There wasn’t some big leap with startup capital. It was steady, intentional growth. Book a session. Improve the gear. Improve the experience. Raise the prices. Repeat.
Looking back, I’m actually proud I started small. It forced me to focus on skill, connection, and service, not just equipment. And that foundation is still what my business is built on today.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been simple. Provide an incredible experience every single time.
From the first inquiry to gallery delivery, I focus heavily on how my clients feel. I guide them with styling, help them feel comfortable in front of the camera, keep sessions relaxed and fun, and make sure they never feel awkward or unsure. When people feel taken care of, they remember it.
I also strongly believe in under promising and over delivering. If I say galleries will be ready in two weeks and I deliver early, that matters. If I promise a certain number of images and deliver more, that sticks with people. Those small moments of exceeding expectations build trust.
Most of my growth has come from word of mouth. Happy clients tell their friends. They come back year after year. They leave thoughtful reviews. I truly believe that focusing on service and consistency has grown my business more than any ad ever could.
