Deborah, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
I had been a mental health advocate and professional for several years. At the time, I was the education director for the NAMI TX and was teaching and writing curriculum for helping parents and promoting better education for professionals working with children. Part of this entailed me researching alternatives for treatment. I was very focused on finding more holistic treatment options. I heard about a therapy using handwriting and was very skeptical. I sent the woman who offered this service a sample of my daughter’s handwriting. I was shocked when she called me within thirty minutes of receiving my email. She told me my daughter was in trouble and was possibly suicidal. I rushed to my daughters room and she was very despondent and was talking about killing herself and she did have a knife. The therapist also told me she had been cutting herself and she had. I had to learn more about this!!!! I went through the therapy myself and it was life changing. I then trained and became a handwriting therapist and several years later, became a trainer. I am one of a very select group that does both. I have seen this change many lives, even if they do not complete the program. And when I am stressed or have something traumatic happen to myself, I return to the trauma releasing part of the program and am still amazed at what it does.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have owned a private investigative business for over 30 years. Due to problems with mental health in my own family, I became an advocate, volunteer and later a mental health professional. Part of this journey pointed me to the arena of spirituality as for great health, since we are holistic beings of mind, body and soul, I also became a spiritual coach. It seems like I do many things. However, at the core, what I do is deliver information and support to people so they have enough details to make better decisions and to have a complete idea of what they need to move forward to better lives. Overall, spiritual coaching is my primary focus with handwriting therapy being one of many tools that I utilize to help people to get to the core selves. This helps them to realize who they are and what their best self is and how it is achievable. Releasing fear and giving forgiveness to themselves are core components of this path.
Have you ever had to pivot?
The major pivoting in my business life came when I was hired to find an adult daughter for a family who had successfully been living off the grid for over a year. She would contact the family on rare occasion. However, they were unsuccessful in getting her to engage with them fully or to come home. I and a team of my best experts tried to break through her emails and use them to track her location with no success. She was not leaving a footprint anywhere we could find. So I explained to the family that the only thing they had left that they could control was the way they spoke with her in their communications. Using my training for being able to negotiate and e-escalate situations in my investigative business, we carefully constructed their response to her over the next few months. The bottom line is that she did eventually accept their offer of help and did come home and I spent the next year working with them to develop styles of communication and strategies to reconnect as a family. There were several levels of difficulties to over come to achieve this. This was my first awakening that I needed to use my strengths in a much different direction and my consulting and coaching business was begun.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
My super power is my honesty and being true to who I am. People call me authentic. I also love what I do and I love being able to help people. Sometimes, not I take that back, most times, it entails hitting hard on subjects they want to avoid. And though I am tough, people feel safe with me and they trust me. I believe that is because I see people the way God sees them most of the time and this allows me to feel compassion more than frustration with difficult situations and people when they are stuck in patterns and self harming beliefs. I am blessed with the spiritual gifts of being an empath and intuitive and being able to see the big picture. I can elaborate on this more if you like. Ultimately my goal though is to help people define who they are as a body, as a mind and as a spirit so they can be complete and use all their gifts and talents as it is intended in this life.
