We recently connected with Deborah Liss and have shared our conversation below.

Deborah Liss, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.

This is a difficult question because all the projects I worked on are special, but I would say that the most meaningful project I’ve worked on is “Catharsis,” a psychological drama feature film where I played the lead role and also wrote and produced. This project holds deep personal meaning in my life for two reasons: it was the first one that I produced, and it came during a crucial time in my life, coinciding with the COVID-19 pandemic. After moving from Brazil to Hollywood to pursue my dreams in acting and writing, I tragically lost my mother. Her support had always been my driving force, and her passing left me in deep grief and confusion. “Catharsis” helped me cope with this loss and find my way back to storytelling.
Writing this script was a cathartic process, and with the support of our amazing team, we overcame the challenges of producing an indie film. Now, we are in the post-production stage. “Catharsis” symbolizes resilience in every way and will always hold a special place in my heart.

Deborah Liss, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

I’d be delighted to share more about myself and my journey in the entertainment industry. I’m Deborah Liss, a Brazilian-American actress and writer deeply passionate about the world of storytelling. From my earliest memories, I’ve always been in love with the magic of words and the power of the stage. I was born in Lages, a town in southern Brazil, and raised in Blumenau, two cities that I hold dear to my heart. I developed a strong connection to the English language at an early age because of my dream of making my mark in the world of acting and writing in Hollywood.
I moved to the USA in 2015 to pursue acting in Los Angeles. It was during this time that I met my now-husband, who shares the same artistic passion as me.
However, life took a heartbreaking turn when my mom passed away in 2016, causing me to lose sight of my purpose. But, as the years passed, I began to believe that my mom’s energy was guiding me and also placing the right people in my path. They reminded me of my purpose as an artist. And through the art of storytelling I started my process of healing.
Since then, I started my journey to improve my writing, and I took some classes at UCLA Extension for screenwriting where I received inspirational feedback from my teacher about a script I’m working on called “Child Star”. Michael Barlow said, “Deborah is a golden star student…First comment, this is absolutely terrific, this has the feeling of a story, it has big emotional charges, and this is a really potentially good narrative.”

My journey has taught me that art has the power to save lives, and that’s one of the driving forces behind my passion for storytelling. My goals are to touch hearts, provoke thought, and spark meaningful conversations through my stories.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?

The most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative for me It’s the knowledge that my work has the potential to impact lives.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?

Yes, there is indeed a mission driving my creative journey. As I always say, I believe that art has the power to save lives and the power to transcend boundaries, cultures, and backgrounds, allowing us to understand and empathize with one another. My goal is to create narratives that not only entertain but also inspire, heal, and leave a positive impact on the audience.
