We were lucky to catch up with Dashay Jocelyn recently and have shared our conversation below.
Dashay, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
My mom is truly the reason that I have the courage and consistency to purse a career in Entertainment. If I would have wanted to be a chicken when I grew up, my mom would have found some feathers (lol). She really took what I loved, planted it, and made it grow. She always made me feel like every dream I had was possible. My mother had a gift of making everyone she crossed paths with feel loved and seen so you can only imagine what she did for me as her child. This industry can be really hard and I’m blessed to have been raised by a woman who knew how to keep and spread her light no matter how dark things felt or were. I inherited this wonderful trait from her and it’s been supremely helpful in a world where you have to remain optimistic through tons of “no’s’” until you get a “yes”. Every closed door I encountered, she was quick to remind me that God loves me, I got this, and it’s all going to be worth it. I would have definitely given up without her love and full support. Shout out to Nancy Josefina Garcia honestly, I’m so grateful to be your daughter and I’m so appreciative of you, always.

Dashay, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi Ya’ll! My name is Dashay and I wrote and produced (with the help of so many wonderful people) a web series called “Unstable”. The story of an Afro-Latina girl who moves from New York to Los Angeles in the pursuit of a career in Television. Along the way she deals with the hardships of human-ing, heartbreak, and homelessness. Season 1, she meets new friend Luis and through their journey they always seem to find the light in the dark spots of life. I feel that part of my purpose is to guide people on keeping their peace in the most painful moments. I use this show as a tool to accomplish that along with becoming a Jay Shetty certified life coach. Recently we filmed most of Season 2 but had to hold due to lack of finances and now the strike as well. I am actively crowdfunding so if you see this and would like to help you can “Buy Me A Coffee” link in bio on Instagram @unstableofficial. My background was mainly in Musical Theatre but I moved west to work in production and the hope is to end up on Broadway during some points in my career. I started a production company called NJG Productions which produces my personal project and in the future, many others. Currently I work at Buzzfeed & Complex as a Production Coordinator for several channels including Pero Like, Cocoa Butter, APOP, 360 with Speedy, and Complex Sneaker Show. This is was a dream of mine for a very long time. I’d been applying to this company for over seven years until I finally landed it. In addition to my role, I’ve been recently submitting videos and they’ve been accepted and posted on several pages. My path has been a slow build but I’m very thankful for where I am and I’m excited to keep going.

Have you ever had to pivot?
I would say the start of it all, when I was homeless with Luis. We had to make a plan each day. Sometimes it was a good plan, sometimes it wasn’t but it was a very transformative time in my life. We literally had no idea what the next part of our story was but we walked through it with optimism and wine lol. This really tested my ability to keep my peace because it was a difficult circumstance to be in. Going through that journey taught me the skill of troubleshooting a situation instead of sitting in it. I use this in so many different areas of existing now. Even though is was a crazy journey, I learned so much and was inspired to write “Unstable” because of it.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
The goal is to help people. Dropping little life lessons in my episodes and becoming a life coach in order to better serve the world is huge part of my journey. I really want to be a beacon for anyone who feels like life has taken a hold of them. I’m a conveyer of the understanding that life is a rollercoaster and all you can do is control you, and you got this! My mission is to help others just like me who want to create and have no idea how. They could come NJG Productions and we will be able to provide all the tools and knowledge to assist in their dream coming true. I love being part of a bigger picture and that’s what motivates me to keep going.
