We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Darius Middleton a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Darius, thanks for joining us today. Your ability to build a team is often a key determinant of your success as a business owner and so we’d love to get a conversation going with successful entrepreneurs like yourself around what your recruiting process was like -especially early on. How did you build your team?
I’ve been able to build a solid team of people that believe and support the dream, however there are certain situations where it’s just about me. It’s all about the work that I put in 24/7 before I have concern about other. Recruiting is easy when you know who you are looking for; it takes the right dedication from individuals in order for it to work. If there was anything i would do differently it would’ve probably been the environment I was around. Growing up it was harder to see the vision of what I really wanted for my career till I got older and more experienced.

Darius, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a singer/songwriter, producer, and vocal coach based out of Raleigh NC. I have a ton of experience working and collaborating with numerous artists and brands in the industry so far so people that collaborate with me get multiple things: attention to detail, accuracy, and a quick turnaround time. I can do multiple things for any brand:
Performance (solo or live band)
Songwriting
Production
Mixing/Mastering
Vocal/Piano Lessons
Jingles

Any advice for managing a team?
Always remember to keep your composure. It’s always more important for the owner or manager to keep a calmer temperature through anything because the team goes as they go. Set an atmosphere for your to learn how to control your emotions, and be willing to listen to your team. As the leader you have to check the ego at the door and that starts with you.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Consistency. Talent is great but without the effort to continue to keep putting in the work no matter what separates the good from the great.
