Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Connor Roberson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Connor, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
Learning the craft was one of the largest hurdles I’ve faced on this journey. I’m entirely self taught. I certainly could have learned more quickly if I’d have taken some courses or had a teacher going in, but I think the whole process is more gratifying if you are able to achieve success on your own.
Really, all I did was read the manual on my camera and pick up a few tips and tricks from friends or YouTube along the way. The key is just to get out there and do it. You can research all you want, but failure is the greatest teacher, and you can’t fail if you don’t actually try to succeed.
Eventually I got to a point where my biggest problem was not receiving any critique or feedback. You can’t really improve if you don’t know where your deficits are. So, I turned to the internet once more. I started posting photos to online forums and groups asking for feedback, and was finally able to get some input on fine tuning my craft.

Connor, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Connor! Owner and operator over at Silver Fox Snapshots here in Charleston, South Carolina! I’m a Charleston native with a passion for photography and anything to do with the great outdoors. I’m 29 years old and currently live with my fiancé and a lazy beagle named Sandy.
I grew up in an artistic family, with my father being an excellent musician, painter, and potter, my brother an excellent musician and artist, and my mother who was an excellent painter and sketch artist. While my family was brimming with artistic talent, I seemed to have drawn the short stick. I certainly couldn’t draw, paint, or sketch things. It wasn’t until I picked up a camera that I was able to discover my passion.
Living in Charleston, I was never short on interesting places or things to photograph. As time went on and my skills improved, what had started as a very expensive hobby slowly began to turn in to the business you see today.
As far as the business goes, I really provide whatever a client wants or needs. My specialty is in non-flash outdoor photography ranging from events, landscape, real estate, you name it. While shooting with natural light only certainly limits the times and places I can shoot, neither myself of my clients have ever been disappointed. Shooting in natural light really allows for true to life photos that really just accentuate the natural colors and features of a subject.
My whole goal when I started was to show people how the world looked through my eyes, for people to see in themselves the same beauty and magnificence I saw in them. To do that any other way than naturally just wouldn’t seem right to me. I’m really proud of that, and its one of the cornerstones of my business.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Honestly, word of mouth. At this point most of the clients that approach me have done so because they have friends or family that I’ve done work for. We live in such a digital society now a days, it’s a bit ironic to me that physical conversation about a digital product is where most of my business has come from.

Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Hmm. That’s a tough one.
I wish I had been a little less shy about approaching people already in the business. When I first started out, there wasn’t a whole lot of resource aside from YouTube that I could find. While it was certainly useful, you can’t really ask a video a question. Having someone to talk to and bounce ideas off of is what really helped me out. I could have fixed a lot more of my problems earlier on if I would have just asked someone.
Never be afraid to seek help from a local professional! A “no” is certainly discouraging, but a “yes” is worth the risk 100 times over.
