Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Breona Wilson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Breona, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you come up with the idea for your business?
The idea for Afro Delights came to me naturally, long before I ever saw it as a business. Baking became a form of therapy for me after surviving sexual abuse as a child. For years, it was the one place where I felt safe, grounded, and fully in control, and over time it grew from a coping tool into a source of purpose.
As I got older, I realized there were many bakeries around me, but few that used food as a way to create space for deeper stories. I hadn’t seen a bakery that intentionally uplifted survivors or acknowledged healing as part of the experience. That gap became the foundation for Afro Delights, and it’s only the beginning of where I dream to take this bakery.
Afro Delights is more than a bakery—it’s built on resilience, comfort, and community. The food draws people in, but the mission is what makes it different. My guiding belief has always been, “Food is the doorway. The story is the heart. The impact is the destination.” That philosophy continues to shape everything we do, allowing Afro Delights to be a place where people feel nourished, seen, and connected.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Breona Wilson, the founder of Afro Delights, a survivor-owned, Black-owned bakery based in Tucson. I found my way into baking through healing—what started as a personal outlet slowly became something much bigger. Baking became a place of comfort for me, and over time it showed me how food can gently bring people together.
Afro Delights centers on Southern-style cornbread paired with whipped honey butter made with local honey. The food is familiar, cozy, and meant to be shared. Whether it’s enjoyed at tastings, events, or small gatherings, it’s designed to help people slow down and feel at home.
What truly sets Afro Delights apart is the intention behind it. This isn’t just about baked goods—it’s about creating space. I wanted to build a bakery that feels welcoming, honest, and rooted in care, while making room for stories that are often overlooked.
When people support Afro Delights, I hope they feel connected to something deeper. They’re not just supporting a bakery—they’re supporting a survivor-owned business that speaks up for others and creates space for voices, especially women of color, to be seen, valued, and heard.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
One of the most powerful sources of resilience in my journey has come from the women I’ve met along the way. Over the years, after learning my story or simply sensing the intention behind Afro Delights, many women have opened up to me about their own childhood experiences. They’ve shared how much they longed for a safe place to speak freely—sometimes for the very first time.
At farmers markets, I’ve had customers quietly show me tattoos that symbolize their survival or tell me pieces of their stories while standing at my booth. Those moments have stayed with me. They reminded me that healing often happens in small, unexpected spaces, and that sometimes people just need to feel seen and believed.
Listening to so many women has strengthened my own resilience. It pushed me to grow, to hold space more intentionally, and to build Afro Delights as more than a business. My desire has always been to create a place—through food and presence—where survivors feel safe, supported, and reminded that they are not alone.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Honestly, Farmers markets. You get to meet people face to face, true interaction. The best source has been showing love the way Christ teaches us. Whenever I meet someone—at a farmers market, a meeting, or an event—I treat them like a best friend. I make sure they feel seen, safe, and like they truly belong. That kind of care has helped me build lasting relationships, bring people back to my booth, and get hired for events. Being Christ-like is more than simple—it’s gentle, loving, and exactly what our world needs right now.
