We were lucky to catch up with Alissa Studt recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alissa , appreciate you joining us today. Was there an experience or lesson you learned at a previous job that’s benefited your career afterwards?
Before going full time as a business owner, I worked in commercial banking. The bankers I worked under stressed importance of the high quality customer service. Quick replies, lots of ‘hand holding’, going the extra mile. Thank you notes, check in’s and Christmas gifts for clients. It wasn’t commercial banking anymore, it became relationship banking. The saying “It’s not about what you know, it’s about who you know.” Means more now as a full time entrepreneur than it ever did before. The relationships created and deepening those connections have been monumental in the growth of my business. I continue to write thank you cards, send Christmas gifts and follow up with past clients. It’s that extra mile that frequently gets skipped over that makes a customer a client.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I always knew I wanted to be an entrepreneur growing up watching my mom work for herself. It took me years to figure out what I wanted to do. In 2018, planning my wedding, I fell in love with the event industry. I knew where I wanted to end up but I still wasn’t sure what I wanted to end up doing. Fast forward to my baby shower in 2020, I was prepping a balloon garland (for the first time) and thought “this is kind of fun.” I did a little searching and saw there was a need for balloon decor. With a few pushes from a couple of friends and colleagues, I bought some balloons and started to teach myself how to create. Trying to name my business was a tough one. I couldn’t come up with anything I really loved. I wanted to somehow incorporate my nickname, Liss. I added on a B for balloon *how creative* and Bliss Balloons Co was born. The meaning of bliss is to essentially be so overcome with joy you forget about your surroundings. I strive to bring literal bliss each time I install balloons for any and all reasons to celebrate. We love trying new things and getting creative. There’s nothing like seeing an install come together and your clients excitement.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I feel like this is too simple of an answer but it’s simply envisioning what you are going to create and then having the paid opportunity to give that vision life. There’s nothing that compares to clients saying “I trust you do whatever,” and you creating magic!

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I am a very competitive person. Learning that there was a balloon community where people were friends, shared tips and tricks, etc. was very interesting at first especially in my local market. Unlearning that everyone is a ‘threat’ was pretty simple once I came to the realization we are all in it because we love what we do and it gives us life. Yeah, there are some bad apples but it’s not cut throat. We support each other, inspire each other and give credit where credits due!
