We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alexis O’Brien a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alexis, appreciate you joining us today. What’s the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
I had several well known photographers take time out of their day (for free) to help me start my business. Answer questions, break things down, share wisdom etc. Photographers all over charge for their time to do these things and so many people helped me free of charge.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a family and newborn photographer in Tampa, Florida. I specialize in all things motherhood/family/newborn. I love documenting families throughout all of different seasons of life. From newly expecting to welcoming home their third child and everything in between.
I strive to give a stress free client experience. I have my own studio with a client closet full of dresses for mom’s to take that stress off their plate. I send guides, location sheets and provide everything for new babies. I want families to say “that was fun” after their session.
I am most proud of my client retention. I have some families I have photographed over 15 times. I strive to come back in different chapters to document big and little things.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I started my photography business in South Florida and after 9 months my husband and I moved across the state to Tampa. I basically had to start everything all over. Gaining clients, finding places to shoot, connecting with other people in my community.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Referrals. Nothing feels more like a compliment than a referral from someone who had a wonderful experience with me.
