Today we’d like to introduce you to Guetty Antiste
Hi Guetty, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey as the Empanada Assassin began with a deep love for the 3Ns: Nutrition, Network, and Nostalgia. I’m passionate about feeding people and providing a basic need, bringing people together, and sharing memories during times of joy. Growing up, I was surrounded by the rich flavors of my Haitian and Martinique heritage and the joy of sharing meals with family and friends.
My love for pates (what we call empanadas in Haitian culture) came from my uncle, who brought us a box every Sunday. We eagerly looked forward to indulging in the variety pack of flavors. Through this simple gesture, he taught me a valuable lesson: never go to someone’s home empty-handed. Empanadas became my love offering to others, a way to feed their souls. I love watching people enjoy these creations; the joy on their faces brings me joy.
September 9, 2023, marked the one-year anniversary of submitting my resignation, taking a leap of faith that I had spent 12 years trying to build up the courage to pursue. What a difference a year makes! From appearing on national television to becoming co-owner of a gluten-free retail space where people can now enjoy my empanadas. Despite my passion, I was initially intimidated by the idea of baking and running my own business. I leaned heavily on my faith in God to help me overcome imposter syndrome and take the leap. I jumped, scared but planted in good soil, believing in the journey. I knew that beyond the fear holding me back was the person I was meant to be—free. Free from anxious thoughts and daydreams of what sustaining myself through my creative endeavors would look like. Free to believe in myself and to bring joy to others through these pockets of deliciousness.
I embraced the challenge, and even though I still feel anxious at times, I remind myself that this energy used to go toward working for someone else’s dream. Now, it’s directed towards my own purpose. Making empanadas became my safe place during COVID; it allowed me to block out the chaos of the world and be present while teaching myself how to bake. Today, Empanada Assassin allows me to share my culture and love for food with others in a meaningful way.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Diving into unfamiliar territory means things won’t always go your way. The journey to becoming the Empanada Assassin hasn’t been smooth, but I expected that. The fear of the unknown was one of the biggest reasons it took me so long to take the leap. One of my first lessons was-this is no longer JUST a hobby! Adapting to entrepreneurship has been tough, especially balancing roles of chef, manager, marketer, accountant, creative artist, and so much more, all while prioritizing my mental health and family obligations. Each role comes with its own responsibilities, and it can be overwhelming especially when you don’t have the answers. I left the security of corporate America, where income was steady, to face constant financial uncertainty. There’s no sick pay, and I’m responsible for funding my income, covering all costs, and keeping the business profitable. Finding the right balance between quality and scalability has been a challenge because I want every empanada to perfectly reflect my culture and values. I remind myself that while growth is important, it shouldn’t come at the expense of quality. As a creative, it’s tempting to seize every opportunity, but not all are right for my business at its current stage. I’m learning patience and focusing on building the tools for a stable, long-lasting business that will surpass the statistics of small business startups.
Despite the struggles, each obstacle has become an opportunity for growth. I’ve learned it’s okay not to have all the answers immediately and that seeking help from others is a sign of strength, not weakness.

This journey started with so many unknowns;how to bake, how to run a business, and how to trust the process. Despite those uncertainties, I’ve built something on my own that resonates and makes a difference in people’s life , and that’s what makes me proud and gives me my WHY everyday.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
During the pandemic, there was an app called Clubhouse created where people from around the world came together to share information, provide support and just hold space. I participated in rooms focused on entrepreneurship, business education, and spaces where people who looked like me or shared similar experiences were seeking more out of life. I built communities within these spaces , sought mentorship and attended workshops. I also read leadership books such as Get In The C.A.R by Monte Williams and the classics like Rich Dad Poor Dad. More importantly, I spent significant time in quiet reflection, praying to God, crying, journaling, and grounding myself for the unknown journey ahead. I started to develop what initially seemed like an abstract plan to build an empanada empire. Today, that reality doesn’t seem so farfetch. This is a true testament of the promises that are set forth in your life cannot be denied.
Do that THING you’ve been wanting to do. That THING you would do for free. That THING that brings you JOY and put a price on it!
